What antivirus software does he use, and tell the brand and version if you know both.

I would probably grab these resources:

WinSockFix (use this if browsing the Internet is broken after you remove malware)

Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta

Free 30-day trialware of Webroot Spysweeper

right-click this link, Save Target As and get the scanner that's mentioned in that text file.

If he has no antivirus software or wimpy/outdated antivirus software, uninstall it and also download a free 30-day trialware of Kaspersky Antivirus Personal 5.

Here we go!

  1. Install the Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta and update it. Do not scan yet!
  2. Install the Webroot Spysweeper trialware and update it. Do not scan yet!
  3. Make sure you have WinSockFix on hand! :Q
  4. Install Kaspersky Antivirus and... do not scan yet!
    • go to Configure Updater and set it to use Extended Databases
    • go to real-time and on-demand scan settings and max them out
    • NOW run an update and do not scan yet! 🙂
  5. Disable System Restore. You know how to do that? Guides here if you need help.
  6. Reboot the system into Safe Mode. He gets into Safe Mode by restarting the computer and tapping the F8 key repeatedly when he knows the first WindowsXP boot-up screen is about to show, the one with the scrolling bar. If his keyboard has an F-Lock key like many fancy ones do, he has to hit that for the F8 key to do its thing.
  7. Now he's in Safe Mode, NOW pull out the guns and do an Alpha Strike
    • Scan with Kaspersky antivirus and that McAfee scanner utility, both of which will go after worms, Trojans, viruses and a certain amount of adware/spyware.
    • Scan with Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta (full scan, not the Quick Scan) and Webroot Spysweeper, and make sure MS AntiSpyware doesn't "Ignore" anything, nuke it all.
  8. Take a snack break or two, those four scans will take a while 🙂
After that, boot up into regular Windows and see if it helped. If it did, and the system is clean, enable Automatic Updates and run it through Windows Update too.
