Ever get a stupid idea?
Before I give the stupid idea I had here are my symptoms.
I have a Spacewalker HOT-661 Bx board with a Intel 350 PII processor. My machine keeps locking up. the trick is the lock up is not consistant. It may happen after 5 minustes, 30seconds or up to 30 minutes. It sounds like a registry problem... BUT... Hear is what I have done.
I have removed every card expect 2D Video, and formated the C: drive. I reboot and install win 98 2nd ed. and that is all.... the machine still locks up if left alone.... The power switch will not turn it off... and the reset button will only bring turn the monitor to stand-by mode. The system looks like it is rebooting as the Cd-rom will flicker the hard drive light doesn't go out and the machine stays locked up with the monitor in a stand-by state. I have to pull the plug on the ah heck.
What was the Stupid Idea? I was up late one night trying to get a mic to work with my sound card but to no avail. I had the case apart and noticed a 2 pin connector running out of the cd-rom power connection plug.... I thought Hmmmmm.... Whe I looked to the sound card I found a perfect match.... I never bothered to note what the card had wriiten by the connection.... Joined the 2 and rebooted.... Yes.. there was a little smoke and I immediately turn the power off. the wire had been melted.... The card appeared fine and I knew I had to replace the ATX supply. Before I did I booted up the machine to see if it worked properly. Amazingly it did... I left it like that for about a week. Then the machine started to lockup. So I replace the power supply... The machine worked fine for about 2 hours... Then a little lockup... that was 2 days ago and now the machine is back to square one.
Opinions or suggestions.... Go easy on the flaming as I have already taken abit of flack for this.
Could the motherboard be damaged without killing my sound card?
😱
