Help out my cracking network...

My current computer is cracking RC5 but isn't flushing/fetching because it's not hooked up to the net. For one thing, I can't set up permissions so I can share my computer. On my Win2k computers, I can only share C:\, but not its subdirectories. Also, I am using phoneline networking. My server is in the basement. My main computer is on the 2nd floor of my house. I get lost packets when I try to ping it (one to three per four ping packets) from both the server and other client, which is on the first floor. Any ideas? Do you think the phone jack/connection could be bad?

If you're losing packets with machines that close together, you might want to put some serious consideration to CAT5. It's cheap, and it works. 😉

Does losing packets mean the connection is bad, the distance is too far, or what? My problem is that I don't think my mom would appreciate wires running around the house. That is why I chose a phoneline network.

Packet loss in your case may well be a factor of the quality, or rather lack thereof in the phone line itself. Typically, I fish the CAT5 through the wall - but of course there is the option of wireless networking. That would solve the problem, but could hit your wallet just a tad bit.

Dude I Would tend to agree with DanC Cat5 works.... I Would Just run the Lines through the wallsso your mom never has to see them. Besides the fact that I Think its more reliable.. Its Faster...

nt admin shares all hard drives, if you can't access the whole thing read/write using the machine's admin password something is wrong.
