Help! Or: Does 8X AGP require more voltage than 4X?

I recently built a P4 3.0/2GB/9700Pro/Intel D875PBZ system, using Antec's Sonata, with the included 380W PSU. I'd been getting random lockups while on the desktop that seemed video card related (screen would become garbled, and a few seconds later I couldn't toggle num-lock.) Once or twice I sat down at my computer after it'd been idle for a bit, and as soon as I moved my mouse, the screen went bananas.

EDIT: I could play UT2004, 3dMark04, KoTOR, and other games with absolutely no lockups. The crashes always occurred while on the destkop.


All my DIMM slots are filled, but I ran Memtest overnight on the extended settings, and it reported no errors, so I don't think that was the cause.

I did two things after which the lockups stopped (knock on wood.) I dropped my 9700 Pro from 8X to 4X, and gave the RAM 4-4-4 timings, from the 2.5-3-3-8 reported by SPD ( I think. ) Since Memtest seemed to run fine, and the only other thing I did was lower the AGP speed. I figure since it's an Intel board that should be fairly stable, maybe I have a flaky/insufficient power supply. (Yes, the 9700 is plugged in using a floppy connector.) I have no clue if 8X requires more voltage; does anyone know, or have thoughts on what could have been causing my problems?

I'm not overclocking, and the D875PBZ has no AGP voltage options. I have two 7200 RPM drives, an old Plextor 12/10/32A, and an

Audigy 2 in the case. They're all plugged into an APC Back-UPS 800, with over/undervolt protection.

The 8x interface actually uses half the voltage(.8v vs. 1.5v), but that's besides the point. An Antec 380W power supply is going to be enough; your problems aren't power related.
 
Interesting. Does operating at 4X on an 8X capable slot change the voltage, or does it stay at .8v?
 
It's whatever mode the card itself it operating on. If it's 4x, it has to be 1.5v, and if it's 8x, it has to be 0.8v. The slot doesn't determine the voltage, the mode does.
 
Yes, that's exactly what I asked. Operating at 4X on an 8X capable slot changes the voltage. Thanks.
