What's Virtual Private Networks (VPN)?

These are secured private network connections, built on top of publicly-accessible infrastructure, such as the Internet or the public telephone network. VPNs typically employ some combination of encryption, digital certificates, strong user authentication and access control to provide security to the traffic they carry. They usually provide connectivity to many machines behind a gateway or firewall.

Entry Level VPN solution can be done via Software at a minimal cost.

Serious VPN solution needs Real Server installations, and or Hardware solutions. The cost might mount into the High hundreds and more. .

The following is mainly a collection of Entry Level software issues.

Alright I have taken a look at those links, and they are all really concentrated on business applications. Is there anyone out there that can help me setup a simple VPN for gaming?

Johnbear007, for gaming, get some Linksys BEFVP41s - reasonably cheap (ca. $100), hardware crypto (fast). You could do it in software on your PC, but most real gamers don't like major extra CPU loads on their PCs..

This is for short term use. I dont mind the CPU usage, or ill just make another little box as a server

Johnbear007, for short term use, Google for PPTP. As a protocol, it sucks. For security, it sucks. For quick and dirty and cheap, it's probably what you want.

Hello.
I'm trying to set up a VPN also and hope someone can help. I followed alot of the links provided above
and thought I was all set but am now getting a PPP error
I'm using win xp as my vpn server and trying to access it using Win 2000.
I really feel like i'm batting my head agains the wall.
I went in under properties of where you can disable LCP and tried that as a trouble shoot
and that didn't help either.
Any Ideas, thanks much ahead of time. wiffy2
