Hey there, right now i have

754 3400+
x800 pro
1.5gb of ram
on a soltek nforce 3 mobo.

i know that this computer is ancient, but it has been good to me the past couple of years.

I just purchased a nice 42" westy 1080p monitor, and i want to build a computer that will allow me to run the new upcoming games (FPS's and MMO's eg. Vanguard & Crysis) with all the eye candy on at that 1920x1080 resolution. I know that this resolution isn't the max that certain cards like a 8800gtx can handle.. so i don't know if that card would be overkill.

I'm leaning towards getting a C2D 6600 with 2gb of ram and a 7950gt or a 8800gts.. but can someone please advice me on how to properly go about and build this system.

THings i consider are the compatibility of DX10 and vista. I know that because of this.. maybe i should lay off the 7950gt and just get the 8800gts.. but then again i don't know when the next wave of dx10 cards will hit (as the 88 series is a little too expensive here in Canada atm).

When would be the best time for me to upgrade to a system like this? (or is this system a bit too much even for just 1080p resolution?) And when can i expect to see a price drop on midrange C2D CPU's and dx10 cards?

Thanks in advance.

Click the Video tab, read what Rainbow Six (Unreal 3) does to even an 800GTX. You'll need at least one, possibly even 2 in SLI. That 8800GTS just isn't good enough for 2007 games at 1920x1080.

Wait until you can afford the 6600 or 6700, 2GB, 8800GTX and can't stand to wait any longer.

I would advise waiting at least until the R600 comes out and forces prices on the 8800 series down.

Otherwise, get the E6600 and overclock it at least a little bit ;)

2 GB should be fine.

Hook that bad boy up over DVI or an HDMI adapter, and feel the love.

Any reason not to use DVI?

The R600 (X2800XTX maybe?) will likely handle those high resolutions even better than the current 8800GTX, so it might be a good idea to wait for that, and its nvidia competition. It'll have a 512bit memory controller, which should help a lot at such a high res.

probably because a lot of people don't know that hdmi and dvi are basically the same, except dvi doesn't carry the audio....they here hdmi and think it is better and superior to an older technology like dvi

I think you're aiming just a bit too high on the graphics stakes, if you have to ask about the price then you can't afford it.

Then again you do have a gorgeous new TV, so my sympathy is muted.
