help on my first overclock!

hey all, i plan on trying a quick overclock on my current pc as i am buying a new pc shortly. i will be overclocking on air and dont plan on adding any extra fans and whatnot so if you could explain to me how to do a quick overclock to get this thing as fast as i can (SAFELY) as i still need this pc even after i get my new one. i downlaoded CPU-Z now what do i do?

any help would be greatly appreciated!

CPUz only tells you what you are running at..it doesn't do any overclocking for you..it depends on a lot of things, what motherboard do you have, what memory do you have, what are your temps? power supply? what FSB does your CPU run at on stock speeds? Does you motherboard have memory dividers so you can overclock with out your ram limiting you?

on second thought, i just did a little research and my cpu is already runnning at almost 1.7v and 47 celcius so i think overclocking would be a bad idea, and the ram i have is crap

If you are already running at 47C idle I wouldn't do anything.

lower your vcore to 1.6 trust me, the temp will go down. Right now I run 2500 barton @ 2ghz and 1.6v and have no problem whatsoever with heat. Just set multiplier to 10 and ffront side bus to 200 and vcore to 1.6 and you will be fine (2ghz is like xp 3000+ speed)

its called "BIOS" when the computer starts, first thing u do is press del or whatever button, then u enter a blue screen and there u can change settings.

Hmm, I have a Barton 2500+ as well, I thought the multipliers were locked? Or are they unlocked lower, like the A64's are? I'd much rather use a 10x mult and try to get 200 FSB. Haven't tried it (at my work computer right now). I have a Thermaltake Silent Boost and it's hovering around 42C at idle, while OC'd slightly (175x11). I have the voltage at 1.7 "just in case" since it felt like it was crashing out of BF2 more often for some reason (when I had it at 1.65). Of course maybe it's just BF2!
My mobo is MSI KT6V-LSR, ram is Geil Value 2.5-3-3-6 PC3200, 2 x 512 sticks... Thermaltake 420W PS...

If I recall correctly, the original Bartons did not have the multipliers locked. Then at some point AMD started to lock the multipliers. Shortly thereafter the mobile Bartons came out with unlocked multipliers again.

If I were you I would loosen the timings on your RAM to 3-4-4-8, just in case that is holding you back, and then try to increase the FSB again. If your system is getting too hot, you might want to lower your vcore again and run some torture tests (Prime95) to see if your system is stable. If the only time it crashes is in BF2, then it might not be a hardware problem. If your video card is overclocked, then maybe that's the reason BF2 is crashing.
