Its been so long since i built a computer that all i know now is "newegg", im looking for:

P4 1.5 478+
i845D - P4B266-C? is the BL7 good?
DDR - i freaking missed that muskin deal for $54!! where now!? crucial is so $$
Video - i have an engineering sample of a Radeon 64 and i think its almost impossible to sell it... so i'll run it a little later
HD - im selling my scsi drive.. i still have my promise raid card from my previous computer.. any good HD's out now? any good deals?
CDRW - my scsi plextor is now gone.. Lite-on good now? hrmm..

yeah thats about it.. sorry, its been so long now.. is pricewatch still a good way to go?

hehe i must be out of it too (i didn't even check pricewatch before i bought my stuff). i actually just recieved my P4 1.5 s478 and ASUS P4B266-C from Newegg, boy do they run nice 🙂

id pass on newegg and order from googlegear.com, they have better mobo cpu prices for sure, and as far as i know google is the only one selling the 8IRXP which is by far the best DDR based P4 you can get.

well, thats one dang expensive mobo. i like the fact that it has intel lan and 133promise raid, but its $180! p4b266-c is only $117. i already have a ata66 promise fasttrak. i mean, is the difference between 66 and 133 really different? probably not.. or its so small i wouldnt care for spending 60 more dollars for nothing. i can just buy a nic somewhere else for 81 cents. hehehe

you get a better performance and stability mother board.

the 266c is so lacking its not worth it.

sell your other parts.

all you really need is a video and HD and this can run itsself.

look at why its so cheap its the C version look at the retail 266b and you'll see its 160+

google has a better selection in mobo's and cpus.

together they are the cheapest for the basic combo and memory is cheaper too.

you can Pm me if you like if you have ?'s

but i had a 120 dollar board, it went right back and i spent the extra to get this.

okay misunderstood. hmm.. i cannot justify what is lacking that would cost me $50. just a LAN [$5] and ata raid which i already have.

Your best bets for retailers are googlegear.com , newegg.com and mwave.com.

I trust Asus mobos, and I'm kinda biased towards them after a bad Abit/Via experience. So I can't be very objective about that.

The 1.5 P4 is not a good deal price/performance wise. Your best bet is a Northwood 1.8A or 1.9A. Intel has a good price drop going later this week or next, IIRC.

Check pricewatch on DDR. I trust Crucial, and am kinda biased towards them as well.

For video, it depends on what you do. The sweet spot is a regular GF3 or a GF3 Ti200. If you want the best of the best (IMO) go with a Gainward Ti550 (GF3 Ti500).

good HDDs are model specific. I'm using WD 100 GB special editions now and am pleased with them. I've also been pleased with 60GXP IBMs

Lite-On is good. I've got two a 16x and a 24x. I'm very pleased with them.

Pricewatch is good, BUT, use it in conjunction with resellerratings.com Do not just pick the lowest price. There are a LOT of dishonest retailers on the web.

well lets see

loose one ram slot

loose a power connector

no usb 2.0

loose sound

loose lan

loose ata133 support

------------------------------------------------------------------

3 ram slots
Lan
ata133 raid support
sound ( i dont use it anyways)
4 usb 1.1
4 usb 2.0
smartcard capable
p4 connector

ram,agp,ddr,cpu voltage adjustments
--------------------------------------------------------------------

why not sell the 66 raid and use the onboard? you wont have to upgrade again later.

better to research all options i just upgraded to ata133 drives and saved me 100 bucks on a ata133 raid card

i dont care for ram, i wont be getting 1gb of ddr anytime soon. i dont see a need for usb2.0, all i have is a usb mic and mouse. ata 133 support is fluff. ata133 and ata100 is no different and i can get a lan card for $5, or 80 cents in that dell deal which is gone... and i just decided to drop raid anyways. it will cost me 180 for 2 d740x's when i already have a 75gxp as a storage drive. im just getting a 80gb d540x and saing the 60 dollars for something else. im in colleg and i really have no money. also, i already have the p4 connector for the power supply. and besides, is taht really a selling point?

well i look to future upgrades.

what happens when you run out of power connectors? and if the power connector falls out by accident , that would be a bad thing.

with the P4 connector i found it clips in like the ATX plug so it wont come loose, thats a observation.

id hate to see you have to buy all new parts if it pops out while standing up and running

uh, i think all p4 connectors have clips. and i really really doubt that it will fall out and its sort of the last thing i'd worry about. and besides, i'll upgrade within 6 months again anyhow. =)

<< well if you look at the asus board it uses a standard power connector instead of the p4 connector standard >>

then thats good... it doesnt need it

Is it easy to find thoese? how much after the 1.8A?1.9A?

no its not the p4 connectoer standard was for a reason,

but hey you are the one going to use it so thats your cup of tea, I know I'll never be buying a mobo from Asus and their non standard way. to risky and im not going to worry about my system crashing and have to buy all new parts. I guess saving a couple bucks is worth it to you.

Actually from what I've read it isn't that difficult to bypass the requirement of the seperate p4 12 volt power connector and most mobo manufacturers now are going that route. If you've got any links to reviews showing instability with the normal PS connector i'd like to see them.

I wouldn't worry at all if the p4b266 doesnt require the 12V connector.

Funny, the Asus P4 boards have consistantly been the most stable in every review I've read. Do you have any links to testing that shows instability with Asus/Intel P4 mobos?

<< well if you look at the asus board it uses a standard power connector instead of the p4 connector standard >>

however, if you look more closely at this board it has the stanard P4 connector (over by the CPU and AGP slot), as well as the molex power connector (so you would use the molex only if your PSU didn't have the P4 connector).

again, i have the ASUS P4B266-C board, and i think it's one of the best DDR P4 boards. i, along with many many people i know, do not like excess onboard crap such as audio and LAN, that eat up needless CPU resources.

oh yeah, the one thing i don't like about googlegear is that (well, at least they used to, which is why i don't buy from them anymore) they stick you with a separate "handling" fee for each order on top of the shipping fee.

anyhow, that's just my 2cents.
