help on first overclcok

Hey everyone, I have an athlon 64 3200+ winchester and am looking to do some light overclocking. I've just been reading up on things, and I was wondering if you think this sounds like a reasonable light overclock on stock cooling?

250Mhz HTT
9x CPU multiplier
4x HT multiplier
5:6 RAM divider

giving me 2250Mhz CPU speed
1000Mhz Hypertransport
208Mhz RAM

Would there be a better overclock that would get me in the 2200-2300 range? Or do you think it would be better to aim a little higher, keeping in mind that I don't want to push things too hard (ie I'm trying to avoid upping voltages), and I'll only be using stock cooling. Also, I only have corsair value select ram, so I can't overclock that much.

You can use the 10x multi, right? That would give you 2500 MHz (2.5 GHz). You might have to up the voltage just a bit, but as long as you keep your processor under 60C under load (my standard, some people may judge differently), nothing's wrong .

That looks good, it will most likely do that on stock volts


You can go higher with more voltage, and try different multi's. My 3200+ winnie seems to clock better with the 9x multi, it can't do 250x10 regardless of volts but it will do 289x9=2601 with 1.55v. Like veggito said as long as your load temps stay under 60c your OK.

Thanks for the tips guys. How much of a performance increase do you think I'll see when playing games if I overclock to around 2200-2300...I'm specifically looking for increases in min frame rates. My average fps are fine in all games I play now, but F.E.A.R drops lower than I'd like during the more intense parts at the settings I'd like to play at. Though I hear F.E.A.R is very gpu dependent, so maybe I'd see more of an increase by ocing my gpu, or doing both.

Do both . Actually, for a 200 MHz gain, you get only like, 3 FPS minimum increase..

Yep, overclocking the GPU will have a much bigger effect on minimum FPS than overclocking the CPU will.
