Hey guys, some help.

I was installing a new cooler on my Duron650, and I think I crushed it b/c when I tried to power up, the power turned on, but nothing appeared on my monitor.

When I took off the heatsink, I saw that I cracked the die a bit. I tried to clean it off the best I could, but when I tried to turn on the comp again, again nothing turned on. Did I kill my cpu?

duron 650
chrome orb (was installing super orb)
asus a7v
maxtor 20.4
tnt2
128 mb

thanks!

Most likely. They are fragile. Bummer! :(
I've had chipped cores work, but cracks are usually writeoffs. On the flipside, good thing it was a relatively cheap duron, as opposed to an expensive PIII. :Q

Another thing, usually when I flip the power switch in the back on, the fans run for a few seconds then turn off, then I have to push the power button.

Now when I flip the power switch, everything turns on, but doesn't turn off? ????

Does that mean anything?

That's normal. To turn off, try holding down your power button for a few seconds.

Apparently almost any chip off of the core of a Duron or T-bird will kill it. I knocked a tiny corner off mine and she acted just like yours is now. I have found very cheap and fairly easy way to protect them though, by replacing AMD's sponge rubber feet with hard ones. It should be effective in protecting the core in most situations. I built a web page with step-by-step instructions here:

Let me know what you think. BTW, I also have some cool extreme close-ups of my crunched Duron, you can see that it only take a tiny ding to kill one.
