I plan to buy a DELL desktop system. I found that almost all those system come with 256 DDR2 memory. I want my new system have at lease 512M memory. I know I can configure the system when I order it, but I do not want to do that since DELL memory is expensive. I prefer to buy the memories by mysel and install them.

However, I found most memory available online are PC2700/3200 184Pin DDR memories. IF I buy DELL system with DDR2 memory, shall I only use DDR2? Is DDR2 expensive?

For those who buy DELL system, how did you update your system?

Thank you very much for your reply.

DDR2 is not hard to find. Crucial has a configurator where you can punch in your model number and get the proper memory. DDR and DDR2 have different sockets, btw.

I believe newegg.com is carry DDR2 now you might want to check them out. DDR2 is expensive compared to the regular DDR your used to seeing.

I don't watch prices extremely closely, but when you buy a Dell, quite often buying it with more memory turns out to be a decent price for the memory (because they sell things in such huge volume.) Check on prices but I wouldn't rule out buying it from Dell just yet.

You do if you want keep your processor from being bandwidth-starved. A Prescott-core P4s that run on the Intel DDR2 boards have a very long execution pipeline, so those P4s need the extra bandwidth provided by dual channel operation more than just any other processor. Otherwise, you are going to lose a pretty decent amount of performance due to the bottleneck created by running single channel.

If you have a LGA775 Celeron in that Dell, though, they only support single channel operation. One stick is all you need in that situation.

Dell often have the "FREE DOUBLE MEMORY" offers which are awesome. I got 2 gb of DDR2 for the price of 1gb. Not bad at all!
