Help on Abit VP6

I am building my new computer system on ABit VP6 mobo. As you have known, VP6 support ATA100. I have an 45G IBM ATA100 and 42X CD-ROM and I don't know where is the appropriate IDE I should install it on. Can anyone please advise? Besides, I understand VP6 has build in ATA 100 controller, is that mean I don't need to do anything and I will receive an ATA100 speed?

Thanks in advance!!

I'm sure the manual would told you how to connect your HDD to it, but in case you don't have the manual:

I don't have a VP6, but I can answer your question(s). Yes, the VP6 does have an ATA100 controller. The only thing you would need to achieve that speed is the correct IDE cable (ATA100 spec.). You need to purchase one if it doesn't come with the HDD or motherboard. You can purchase it @ www.pccables.com or a local computer stores.

From the look of the mobo at Abit's site, connect your IBM drive to the regular (non-raid) primary slot (white slot next to the edge of the mobo.

The HDD should have been set as a master by default. You need to set the CDROM drive as a slave drive if you're going to hook them up to the same cable.

I would prefer having the HDD set as primary master and CDROM as secondary (the other white slot) master. You would need two cables for this.

My VP6 came with 2 ATA100 cables, didn't yours?

What OS are you running? Win2K has issues with ATA100 (do a search in this forum and in the OS forum). I installed the SP2 beta and my Maxtor now runs at ATA100, but shows as DMA (not Ultra DMA) in Device manager.

For Win98 you may want the 4-in-1 IDE drivers. Comments, and Win98'rs here? For Win2K only use the AGP driver, leave the IDE etc. alone.

Any more specific questions, just ask, we're here🙂
