Hey Guys
I have a friend that has a G40, which does not power up at all, no lights etc, connected to the AC adapter it doesnt do anything, even with the battery it doesnt do anything
im thinking to get a new battery and new AC Adaptor could fix the issue, what you guys think ?

If you totally remove the battery and then use the A/C adapter, and it does not do on at all -then probably the A/C adapter is gone. Logically, the A/C adapter's outpuI should be tested with a VOM. Any TV repair shop can do that if you don't have one. Otherwise, if you can, take it to a store that has Thinkpads and try one of their A/C adapters.

If the A/C/ adapter is dead, then that can result in a dead battery.

A generic Targus adapter with the correct Thinkpad tip will work.

I wouldn't waste the money until you truly know what the issue is.

Where are you located?? Perhaps there is someone near you that can let you use their minidock brick or G40 brick.... I'm in the Charlotte area....If that helps. I just looked and saw you were in the area too.

I'm in Matthews. I have a Mini dock which uses the same brick as your friends G40.... You are welcome to come over or meet somewhere to test it out.

Old thinkpads also need the CMOS battery changed when that has expired. When an old ThinkPad won't boot... that's one of the first places I look.

You'd be hard pressed to find a 3rd party brick with an adapter for the G40.... that used a DIN type power plug... very odd for a laptop even in those days... Stores wouldn't have them with their thinkpads either.... as anything new on the shelf is the new style plug. IBM only used that brick on two models of the G series.... and that was a long time ago.

WackyDan raises very good points. I never suggested spending money until after the A/C adapter is diagnosed as good or bad. If you are near him - that's a great solution.

Otherwise, this adapter or a compatible on is still available:

G40

The CMOS bettery is a very good check to make.
