ooh, I did that to my roommate too ;) he was a total douche, though. He had 8 am classes every day. Every morning, his alarm would go off at 7 am and wake me up.

I don't mind that. You do what you gotta do, and I could just roll over and go back to sleep. But at minimum, it took him 45 minutes to wake up, and more often then not, he slept through his first class (meaning that his alarm would be going off non-stop for at least 45 minutes, if not a full hour and a half). He wouldn't even wake up enough to slam on the snooze button.

I talked to him about it the first few times, but after two weeks of this, if his alarm was still going at 7:15, I got out of bed, turned it off, and went back to sleep. My earliest class that semester was at 2 pm, and I had no problem waking up :p

He used the excuse that his parents died in a car wreck three times in one year with the same professor and got away with it. That said, the prof had huge classes and was senile, but . . . . .

my standby excuse in big classes was insisting that I really was in the class, and that he must have lost my exam.

I only used it twice, but it worked both times. Of course, it's also worth noting that I had A's in both of the classes... my professors must have looked at the grade books and couldn't think of a reason that an A student would just blow off a major test.

Just tell the truth. My profs in college were generally quite reasonable. Like some of the others have said, contact the prof immediately. Do not wait until the next class!!! Also, are generally a good student with good attendance and grades? If so, that will go a long way in helping the situation. If your grades are bad and/or you already have the rep of a slacker then you may be screwed.

As for stories about missing class... I missed class a few times because of power failures and such, but never missed a test. I did show up a couple of hours late to work once because my snooze button got stuck in the down position the first time I pressed it one morning.

Well he should at least gather himself and think of what he needs to say. But yeah, the sooner you call the less the professor will suspect that you are doing something sneaky.

Just make a reply that says "Ok guys I decided to tell the truth, because lying would be wrong", then email him a link to this thread.

What is the correct answer?

I had a roommate that went to bed at around 5-6AM every 'night' and who obviously was not going to wake up at 7:30AM for his 8AM class. Guess what? He always set his alarm for 7:30AM regardless. It was a CD alarm clock that always played 'Bulls on Parade'(RATM). I hate that song now.

BTW, he was also a chronic masturbator. We caught him about 25 times. One time I got back from a weekend trip and found him wrapped in a towel, naked, in my bed. Talk about being scarred for life.

This happened to me once this semester. I emailed my prof (it happened the day before spring break) and told him that I was sick to my stomach and it was probably best for everyone that I was not in class. I asked if there was any way that I could get at least partial credit for the test and he said that since I had an A in the class at the time he would let me do it. Took the test the first day back from spring break and got a 98, woot!

Happened to me once. I actually posted in a thread a few years back about it when someone else overslept an exam.

What I said:

hmmm. Never missed a midterm. I've been late for one and my mark suffered because if it though.

I did oversleep and missed a lab test. Paged the instructor and told him that i missed it (was about 10 mins after the lab ended) and he let me take it when the second group of students took it.
150 engineering students broken into 5 sets to accomodate the small labs. I considered myself lucky.
Had it been a written exam I may have not been so lucky.

You on the other hand, you will probably not be so licky. By now you could have had the time to verify all the answers on the test (you have already spoken with your friend who just took it).....so the prof will have to make up a new test exclusively for you.

If he lets you take the original test, believe me, i'd be complaining big time if i were in the same class. Even if you were a good boy and didn't get answers to the test, it's not a fair situation. You'd be SOL.

another reply in that thread:

I don't wanna scare ya, but I missed a midterm once cuz I thought it was a different day and I skipped class to study for another midterm. I ended up getting a 0 for 30% of my grade, failed the class, was forced to switch majors, became disillusioned with college and life in general, graduated with a 2.5 average in one of the worst job markets in a long time, settled for a dead-end job at a startup cuz no one would hire me etc. etc. etc.

So my life pretty much sucks after I missed that exam!

(I don't blame it on the exam, but on myself getting so fed up and frustrated and not seeking help after confrontation with the prof.)

I did. I have since no longer become dependant on external sources for me to wake up in the morning. (I usually wake up 1 hour before I need to, then a half hour, then, unfortunately, 5 minutes after I need to) Unfortunately my little brother still needs alarm clocks; this is a problem since he doesn't stay at my place every night, but he invariably forgets to turn off his alarm clock. Since he gets up a good hour before I do this makes me very unhappy. :/

Yes, come forward immediately and tell him you realize you missed the test. If you can try to come in late. Many professors expect a few stragglers who overslept since they were up all night studying.

Heh,

I did this in auditing in Year 2 of College... Missed it by a week (I thought the exam week was review week... NEVER get your exam schedule while still overly inebriated from last night's pub closing)

I went in, fessed up that I misread the schedule, and asked if I might be able to write it.. he was a bit pissed, and rightly so, but he was kind enough to let me write. Granted, I was his "unofficial" TA (read: Paper marking biotch) for the next semester... but we laugh about it whenever we chance to meet..

Just hope your prof is in a good mood when you ask...
