ok, im getting 6 frames a second outside in some areas and when i check my CPU usage with my G15 keyboard using fraps, it says that the total core usage over 2 cores is 4%, WTF is with that? Can i change the .ini to really use 100% of my CPU power to get some frames moving?

No worries, PPUs will fix this all.

You just need to shell out another $250 :D

ROFL!

Although PPU won't fix whatever the OP's problem is.

Its def. a lot more than just not using the cpu if your only getting 6fps. Supposedly it is multithreaded. I havent checked task manager while the game is on, but I have my motherboard set so that it regulates the fan speed according to the cpu temp (set to stay under 35C) and during the game, my fan really doesnt speed up that often. I find that weird because when I play COD2 the fan speed is jacked all the way up.

Maybe you're lagging so much on the video side that the CPU doesn't take a hit? Try turning down some of the eye candy -- e.g. turning off grass / shadows.

I don't think Oblivion has more than one active working thread, so at most I'd expect 50% CPU usage on a dual core (if the tool reports 100% = 2 cores; some tools report 200% = 2 cores, so you'd get "100%" CPU in that case.)

Something must be wrong with that set-up. What resolution/quality settings are you using?

This is a constant problem though right? Many people are experiencing ridiculously low fps drops every now and then.

I get .5 fps when every someone dies and I see their blood. If the blood isnt on screen, it doesn't slow down.

1600x1200 all options maxed, HDR, but the cpu is doing NO work at all, its friggin rediculous. Someone has to know a way to fix this.

Why would you run a game at 1600x1200 when you only get 6 fps? Your video card can't handle those settings and no dual core tweaks are going to save you.

Actually ive found that turning that grass and tree distance right up actually improoves performance. It seems to load everything at once so you get smooth gameplay once the area is loaded, unlike when the distance is down when the game keeps accessing the hard drive to load more.

Of course youll need a graphics card that can cope with it to get it to run smoother ;)

Also, ive got some screenshots here of the game running on my rig with everything maxed (at 1920x1200). I get 25-30fps in the outside areas, and around the same in the cities (except Anvil which seemes to be particularly taxing on the system, drops down to 15 in the docks area, but theres no stuttering or jumping, its still smooth).

Theres also some comparisons of AA+Bloom vs HDR. (43-02-42 is HDR while the 2 before it are Bloom with AA). I think the HDR is deffinately better looking than the AA :)
Oblivion Images

Note: This is running on a 3200+ and not my X2, which ive ripped out of the machine as the problems its causing with NFS: MW (even though ive got the ms patch, affinity setter and amd driver installed) are annoying the hell out of me!

lol outperformed by my opteron 146 + x1900xt! Duel-core for gaming is such waste of money until q4 of 2006

performs ok on mine at 1920x1200.

but it got a bit jerky when i added the .ini tweaks from shacknews, especially when on horseback for some reason.

When your on horseback your moviong faster so it has to work harder to load all the scenery in time :)

I've got it running @ 1280x1040 and "ultra high" settings i can just see it start stuttering outdoors, i may well turn it down later. If the OP has anything like the same level of eyecandy on then i'm not bloody surprised. It doesn't seem to use much CPU power, i was rather disapointed if truth be told.

(My system is similar to the OP's)

What settings are you tree and grass distances?

Also, i didnt find Oblivion used that much ram, out of my 2gig, it was only using 330MB last time i checked. When i get hold ill see hot much it uses with everything maxed.

It is very heavy on the GPU though, my X1900XTX's fan is spinnin max most of the time while playing.

Nah its the latest BIOS for thr shuttle and all the drivers are up to date.

It didnt detect the CPU as dual core until i upgraded the BIOS.

This XPC does have quite a few issues with dual core (not documented by shuttle of course who are convinced its perfect...) but quite a few users are having trouble with it.

Ive got my 4200+ in my parents machine at the moment, when i get a chance ill try NFS in there and see if theres any improvement, problem is, theres no DVD drive in there at the moment, so ill have to get round to putting one in before i can test the games :)
