i am interested in upgrading my video card for my gaming rig. At te moment I have a GF 4800 but want more horsepower. 🙂

My budget is 300.00.

I am torn between an Nvidia 5950 or an ATI 9600XT. HELP!!!!

better 9800XT, but I wouldn't buy such high end card. A 9800Pro overclocked is the same as 9800XT and is much cheaper.

BEST VIDEO CARDS

256mb radeon 9800xt sapphire-Better
256mb geforce fx 5950 gainward/msi

BEST VALUE CARDS

128mb sapphire radeon 9800pro-Better:214$ at newegg.com(oem),229$=retail
128mb fx 5900 msi/gainward:bfg = 175$

Currently the best buy for your budget would be 128mb sapphire radeon 9800pro for 311$ at newegg.com

But u might wanna wait because your card is not bad.It can run these games at 1024*768*32(minmal aa and af)*high settings at 30-60fps

9800 Pro, no question. Newegg has a Sapphire branded for $214, and there have been many good deals on this card in the past week at retail stores.

Don't even bother with the 9600.

Comparing a $150 card with a $400 one?

Just get a 128mb 9800 pro for $200, best bang for the buck. If you really want to spend $300 though you could get the 256mb version.

I'd wait a few more days like Naustica said to let technology flow out then go on a shopping spree. But if your like me you want it NOW! so i'd personally go for a 5900 NU and overclock it 😀

I think you can easily get along with your current vid card, so if you wait a month or so for the prices to go down, you can get a better price/performance value card.
if you really have a need to play games on their maximum settings right now - I would go for the 9800 Pro without any doubt...

$214 Radeon 9800 Pro if you must buy now. It's a very fast and reasonably future-proof card at a reasonable price.

Your 4800 is still pretty decent for most games as long as you forego AA and AF. I'd wait until mid-March to see how the introduction of nVidia's and ATi's next generation (NV40/R420)--both claimed to be 2-3x faster than their current high end parts (5900/9800)--shakes up the pricing landscape. Still, I doubt you'll see 9800 Pro's or 5900's for much less than they're selling for now, and you won't be able to buy a next-gen high-end card for less than ~$400 at launch (mid-April), so you may as well buy the 9800P now and enjoy it.

so you'd wait, but you'd buy now? 😕

Thanks everyone for your 2 cents! I am going to stick with my 4800 until the next gen of cards come out. In fact I may wait until PCI Express.
