HELP NOOB IN TROUBLE WITH GRAPHICS CARD PNY GEFORCE FX 5200 ULTRA

hi, i just bought a PNY geforce fx 5200 ultra 128 mb ddr and im having lots of problems with it. i currently have a am37 motherboard in there (made by FIC) with a athlon xp 2000+. im not sure if the graphic cards problem is that its not compatable or the graphics card is messed up. the problem is that when i turn on the system with the PNY graphics card there are white dots everywhere evenly spaced over the entire screen. and when booting xp professional there are green lines going up and down across the screen. about 6-12 lines on entire screen. and when the computer is done booting and is waiting for me to login the moniter turns off compleatly.
THANKS FOR ANY HELP GIVEN!

The last time I saw something like that it was because my psu wasn't good enough. You do seem to have alot of hardware running of that 350watt psu. Try disconnecting some of your hardware like the cd/dvd drives to see if that fixes the problem.

1.I take it you've plugged in a power connector into your video card?
2.Check the specs of your motherboard to see if it's agp port is giving your video card enough power.

If you can return the card, replace it with a better card. The 5200 isn't a very high performing card anyway... For around $100 you could get a GF4-Ti4200 instead.

The 5200 ultra is indeed quite a bit better than the non ultra, still a bit lackluster though. It sounds quite possible that your card is just a dud. Have you checked the fan on the thing to make sure it's spinning? Could possibly be overheating. I don't really think that power is a problem, you don't have that many components hooked up to the psu.

my fan is running on the graphics card, i forgot to say that right when i got my graphics card when it acted weird i just wiggled the moniter to graphics card connection and sometimes the problem is gone but is back soon. would a 430 wt antec true power be more help or is my 350 wt blue is enough.

Can you try a different monitor because it sounds like either the monitor cable or connection might be causing the problem?

thanks but i dont think thats the problem. anyone else with a idea.

If you can, turn off fast writes in the system bios, or in the nvidia control panel if it lets you.
I had the same exact problem. and turning off fast writes got rid of it.

is it something like write combining, but a issue is that i cant even get into my operation system with the fx in there, but thats for all the help guys! yeah if after the return it stil has the same issue i will try a samsung 19 inch flat insted of my current dell (believed its sony cause it says trinitron on the upper left corner) 19 inch flat.
oh yeah, i forgot to say i upgraded from a intergrated graphics card on my am37 fic mobo. im not sure but it seems to auto disable by itself when i plug in a agp card.

If I am not mistaken you have to manually disable the onboard graphics in the BIOS. I had to, to be able to get a GF2TI on my sisters emachine, that uses the same board.

Could be bad memory. Are you careful about static electricity?

Is anything overclocked?

Did you install the drivers correctly? Try setting AGP to 4x or 2x, setting AGP Aperture to 128MB, and turning off FastWrites (all in BIOS). Make sure the integrated video is also disabled, while you're in there.

Last time I had this happen to me was when my northbridge heatsink fell off. Make sure you aren't stressing your northbridge too hard(high FSB, or poor cooling).

actually he had a point about the capital letters...it's annoying, and somewhat rude. This may be a huge problem and concern for you, but it's really not for us. And it implies urgency that honestly is not deserved. Worst is that you seemed to have done very little smart troubleshooting before posting.

1) Check the card to make sure it's not defective, put it into another computer and see if it has the same problem.
2) As someone else said, try another monitor and another video cable, since you said jiggling the cable helped some but the problem came back.
3) Put a known working videocard in your computer, if there's no problems with it, you can most likely count out your monitor and video cable as possible problems.

Do these things first then report back. IMHO it sounds like you got a faulty card, but check to make sure first.

And even if you bought off ebay, there are policies in place to protect buyers aren't there? Definitely ain't right to sell a defective card.

Another vote here for a dud card. I had a similar problem with a new 440 PCI awhile back. When I booted into Windows, the colors would be all wonky and there would be 4 or 5 solid bright blue bands running from top to bottom, parallel to each other. I took the card back for a replacement, and the new one worked just fine.
