help! no video. I'm losing my mind

My new AM2 system is outputting no video whatsoever. I RMA'd the video card: no change. I RMA'd the motherboard: no change. The monitor works fine when I plug my laptop into it, or my old system. I can't test the system with another monitor because it's dual DVI out and this is my only DVI monitor.

What the hell is going on? Could it be my processor? What could possibly explain this? Shouldn't the mobo post even without a proc in it, or at least show SOMETHING on the screen? I literally am just getting no signal from the video. Black screen.

EDIT: Problem is still going on after replacing PSU. See below.

Most motherboards have some sort of diagnostic function. Do you get a serries of beeps? If so what are they (in long/short).

If you had dud RAM then the computer would not POST. Same for CPU.

I get no beeps at all. I wasn't getting beeps last time either, which really confuses me. I thought the mobo was just dead, but this one is doing the exact same thing.

The case beeps fine though with my old rig in it.

I agree, sounds like bad ram or cpu.

Fans all spin fine.

If my ram or cpu were dead, I would get no video at all? Can't I boot up without a CPU and still get some kind of readout?

Yep, if the RAM or CPU were dead then it would not post. You can't boot without a CPU. All that would happen is the fans start spinning and hopefully the diagnostic LEDs or beeps start going off.

Try removing one stick of RAM and starting up, then the other (replacing the first obviously). I'm guessing you don't have another machine to borrow CPU/RAM from to test with? Perhaps a friend's computer could be the temporary donor for you?

Which mother board are you using, i'm very surprised that it has no diagnostic function.

Swapping out the ram didn't change anything. I got a dual-pack of ram and I can't imagine they are *both* dead. I've got no other DDR2 in the house, nor do I know anyone else who uses it.

Is it the CPU? I hope not... I'll have to honor my warranty through AMD, since my two weeks from newegg are up as I've been waiting for parts from RMAs for weeks.

It could be the PSU. But before you despair give us the component list and see if we can help.

Example: If it's an intel motherboard and you're using 1.9V or higher RAM then it wont' work even if the RAM is fine. We need to know what parts you have. ;)

Ok, i'm going to glare at the PSU.

The sonata comes with a 380W Truepower, not even a TPII. It's got 24A on the 12V rails, hang on, that's bullshit, that's got to be the peak load, no 380W PSU has 290W on the 12V rails.

I'm normally the one saying that you don't need that much PSU, but here i'm going to have to say that i'd be pointing the finger at that.

Unfortunately, I have no way to test that but buy a new one. =\

Can anyone recommend a PS that is a) quiet, b) powerful enough, c) around $50?

Yep, Fortron 450W $52 from newegg last i saw it. If it's not quiet then it's easy enough to mod it to be.

Well, I got the new PS, and I still have the same god damn issue.

And the thing still won't freaking beep anything when I boot, no matter what. What the hell is going on? Is there some imcompatibility somewhere? I feel like my next step now is to return the mobo + ram and get the ram replaced and just get a mobo with onboard video so at least I can have *something* when I boot.

There is no reason that not having HDs and CD plugged in would change anything, right? I should still get something through video, and maybe just maybe a beep?
