I just bought a ECS K7S5A SiS® 735 from newegg and iam using a sparkle power supply with it. The case that i have is an Antec. I installed the motherboard and connected the cables for power and reset switch however the system won't start. Is there a way to turn on the sysetem / check the power supply withouth using the case switches . I am not sure what is wrong, whether it is the motherboard or the power supply as both are brand new.

Try a different PSU. The ECS boards are rather finicky with PSU's although I would think a sparkle would be fine. Make sure all of your wires are connected correctly to the motherboard too.

After ensuring that you power switch cables are plugged in correctly, and that your heatsink is plugged into the CPU FAN plug,

In your case run **ONLY**
Motherboard, CPU, heatsink, hard drive, memory, video card, 1 CDROM.
See if it boots up.

If not run **OUTSIDE** your case
Motherbaord, CPU, heatsink

and short the two power switch pins on the motherboard with a screwdriver by touching both pins at the same time. See it it powers up.

If it doesn't start, you have a bad powersupply or motherboard.

If it works, put everything back one component at a time, and make sure it still boots up. If you get stuck somewhere, that component is the culprit of your booting woes. Hey, it could be anything! For me, one time it was the modem, the other time -the floppy drive:confused: you never know! If you get stuck in the begining your motherboard is shorting out somehow.

When you press the Power button on the case, it makes a momentary connection between the two Power Button pins on the motherboard, signaling the motherboard to start. You can connect the two Power Button pins manually, using a piece of metal such as a screwdriver tip.

The most likely problem is that you might have misinterpreted which motherboard pins the Power switch uses. Look carefully at page 14 of the motherboard manual and make sure you have the switch plugged onto the correct pins. Also refer to page 12 for the Clear CMOS jumper, marked "JP4." Check to make sure that the Clear CMOS jumper is on pins 2 and 3, the pins closer to the front of the case.

The Sparkle power supply you bought should be just great for that board, if it's the 300W one that I remember recommending. You might check the rear of it to make sure the voltage switch is set for 110V, and that the rocker switch is in the "On" position back there. Good luck! :)

True, the instructions on the mobo do SUCK... Wish they were more explicit, not all this XWYZ_PWR_ECS_GAY crap... Oh well...

Well if the manual says PW_BUT and the writing on the case plug says PWR_BTN, exactly how that should be confusing escapes me.

The same way that when I was cooking the other day, and the recipe called for 1 TEAspoon of something, and without a lot of thought, I grabbed the TABLEspoon measurement thingy instead, and didn't notice until it tasted funny. :p

you can check the power supply, but it'll need a load on it. Switching power supplies don't like to be left hanging without a load attached. The flyback regulator needs to see some current to operate properly. Try an old disk drive or something.

Heh i had an Iwill mobo a few years ago that was largely unmarked (kk266-R i think) with a 3 page manual. There were lots of support sites online for it but none in english :) Guess that's one advantage of going Abit/Asus etc that usually isn't mentioned by review sites.
