Recently picked up a Promise ATA66 (damn k7s5a don't have enough IDE) to add additonal hardrives. I Plug the Promise card into 3 different PCI slots, no boot. Don't even get to bios, just black screen. I'm not that familiar with adding on ATA cards, I figure I just plug it in, connect hard drive and just use the native XP drivers... am I missing something? I think it's probably a bad card. Any ideas, suggestions, experiences welcome.
thanks

Does the system boot if the card is not installed? If so then I would assume that you have a bad card. All the ATA controller cards I have ever installed worked fine and initialized their own BIOS after the system's BIOS's first screen.

install the card with nothing connected to it, let XP detect it & install its native drivers. only after you've done that should you put your booting hdd onto the promise card.
you should also change the boot order in bios so the scsi comes before ide as the card is seen as a scsi device! :)

First, re-set the bios setting to its default setting using the Load Optimal Setting. Then try to boot. I have an ECS K7S5A and a Promise ATA 66 and a few things things I learned is that it'll not boot if you have the modem disabled in the bios. I'm referring to the AMR modem option in the bios. Another thing to do if you cannot even get to the bios is to clear the cmos. If you're able to boot after clearing the cmos then you can load the default setting first. If it boots all the way to windows then you can start doing some tweaks with the bios. With the add on card you need to sequence the boot with the floppy(optional), SCSI and the CD Rom.

Additional notes, the system does boot w/o Promise card installed.
When I took the card out, I also noticed that it resetted my bios settings back to default.

Come to think of it, I did have my AMR modem, onboard nic and sound all disabled...

I also tried the card on an Abit mobo, no boot either... is there anything I need to do to Abit bios prevy to installing the card?

Should it matter that I had an ATA ide cable already connected to the card (but not to an hd on other end) when I insert it into PCI slot?
