Help: No BIOS Reading on Intel CPU Fan Speed

Hello and thanks in advance for reading my posting!

I have an Intel D865PERLL motherboard with an Intel P4 2.8 GHz processor. I am using the original CPU fan and somehow lost the ability to monitor CPU fan speed in BIOS (and subsequently in the Windows-based Intel Active-Monitor).

I followed Intel's instructions to get Active-Monitor to re-acquire the fans on startup but since the BIOS is not picking it up I think this is deeper than an Active-Monitor issue. The fan is running and my temperatures are staying within normal operating ranges.

Any ideas in how to get BIOS to find the fan would be helpful. Also, there are three wires on the fan (black, yellow, green). What is the pinout on the motherboard and connector for the fan?

Thanks Again!

If you have another fan header that you can reach with the CPU fan connector, see if it reads there. It's possible that the fan sensor or the sensor lead has gone bad. svc.com has quite a selection of fans and offers cheap First Class mail shipping on small orders. However, if it is an Intel OEM fan, you may be able to get a free warranty replacement.

I have a PERLK with a 2.8c. I haven't had that problem, as posted above it might be a bad connection at the fan or
at the board. Swap fans or connections and see what you get.

That board does have a bios up-date if you haven't flashed it yet.

At default voltages the S-3 setting is sweet. When the computer is put in stand by, all fans shut off :)

Thanks folks! I haven't solved the problem yet but I think your porinters have me in the right direction.

Still looking for the pinouts on the fan connector. Not sure which color wire goes to which connector on the MB.

The fan connector has some raised tabs on it so it only fits onto the mobo connector one way, unless you really force it.

If you go to Intel's website you can download the entire manual for that board in pdf form. This will have drawings that show the pinouts so you can see what's what.
