Help - nic defaulting to wrong subnet

My wife's NIC is defaulting to the folowwing values (from winip cfg) -

IP Autoconfiguration Address - 169.254.165.176
Subnet Mask - 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway - Blank

This is under win98. Generic nic, same brand I'm using in this machine w/o any problems. It's set to DHCP and to obtain an IP automatically but of course those arn't working without the correct subnet.

Edit - I also just noticed the Linksys router is showing her card being constantly active. WTF?

If it's a LAN NIC, assign it a private address from the group your LAN uses. If it's an internet NIC, give it the tcp/ip setting that the ISP recommends. It's defaulting to the address you're getting because it has no static IP and can't find a DHCP server.
