FRIED CPU - STEP 5 WAS FLAW. WOKS FINE WITH NEW CPU.
My first PC just assembled. I have searched the boards and not found an answer but followed suggestions for similar problems I still have a problem:
1. System: IWILL KA266; 512 MB Crcual PC2100; ATA Radeon 64DDR; Toshiba DVD; 40GB Western Digital; AMD 1.333 MHz; Swiftech MC370 heat sink with Paft fan with some arctic silver; Antec SX830 case with 4 fans.
2. On first start I got single long beeps which just went on and on - 20 times or more until I shut down.
3. I reseated the RAM and video card, started up and same result.
4. I removed the Heat Sink and reseated, no change.
5. I removed the heatsink and started to see if heat was being generated in the core - IT WAS and the arctic silver smoked a little.
6. On restarting there were NO BEEPS. In this state all the fans run - case and CPU fans run - is some powered from the MOBO some from the PSU. The MOBO green light is on. The disk drive appears to try and read something. [I dont realy know what should be on the disk in the floppy drive - at the moment I have a W95 start up disk]
7. I reset the CMOS using the jumper. Restarted and NO BEEPS
8. I removed the complete assembly to make sure that there was no grounding/touching mounting etc. Retry - same NO BEEPS. Also removed the RAM and Video card and tried - same result.
9. One other syptom is - if I disconnect the IDE ribbon cable to the MOBO the DVD drive opens and closes.
HELP please.
Thanks
Steve
