Help !! New Xeons don't work.

I put the 2 new (and they are brand new) 2.0 Prestonias (Compaq OEM parts) into the Dell 530. It wouldn't power up.

I think the CPUs are OK, they were brand new in antistatic bags. Could it be that I need different VRMs for Prestonias, they are replacing Fosters.

cheers,

Col

If you are saying that those CPU's are supposed to have 1.5v & you put 1.7v in them then I wouldn't worry about it.
It would take a long time for that modest over voltage to burn them out (years).

I expect some of the hardcore overclockers wouldn't think twice of putting that much voltage up them😉

aye, once I gave my tiny Celeron 2.6V (yes, I know they should get only 2V 😀 ) to get to 550 MHz... well, didn't worked, but at least it posted (but extremely instable... didn't even finished counting the RAM). 0.2V too much shouldn't damage the CPU I suppose.

I Dave got it right, the circuitry on the chips and VRMs stop any damage being done.

Looks like I'll be selling the new Xeons though, just found out that as well as VRMs, my mobo won't support Prestonias..

🙁

You should be able to find a MB that works with those chips pretty cheap or go with 2 single CPU boards that can take Xeons, I'd rather have 2 machines anyway unless you were going to run an Enterprise server.
