I'm downloading LeechFTP, that seemed to be pretty well recommended. I also already have mIRC, but haven't tried to use it yet.

I'm looking to download mp3s from noone in particular. Where to look? How does it work? In general, any help you could throw at me, thanks.

Try to limit the prog suggestions, as I already have them.

If you connect to irc.dal.net, go to channels like #mp3, #cablemp3, #100%-free-mp3s .. they all use the command @locator. So you type @locator <name of song or artist> [w/out the <>] and you will get messages from people saying whether or not they have them. They'll say something like "found 1 match for *matchbox 20*" type !Nick Matchbox 20 - Real World.mp3 to get this file. So copy and paste that into the channel they're in and they'll send it to you or put you in their queue, depending on how many sends they have going. Hope this helps.

I really don't think this is allowed here since its a violation of copyrights.

Could you send those other "references" my way? I'm a newbie to mIRC too...

from mIRC.com I went to What is IRC? there's a list at the bottom of more pages, I think I may have it figured out and the advice already given in here (forgot the name) really helped too.

hope I've helped, good luck, seems like fun so far.
