Help! New System Won't Run DOS

I have tried enabling max CPUID value limit, but that didn't help. I can't run any kind of DOS on my new system. As a result, I can't clone a hard drive with either Acronis or Norton Ghost 2003. Partition Magic can't drop to DOS to apply changes on drives. I can't boot off a floppy or CD that is DOS-based. Any time I try to use a program that has to drop to DOS, the system hangs.

I've also tried booting from DOS-based floppies and CDs. The system always hangs.

Some help here? Obviously it's a hardware or BIOS setting issue.

Thanks in advance.

System:

Windows XP Pro SP2
ASUS PW5 DH Deluxe (using only PATA)
Intel Core 2 Duo (E6600)
Sapphire Radeon X1900XT
2 X 1 GB DDR2-533 RAM

The command line under XP is not DOS, but an emulation, and it should work. I've got some settings that make most of my "DOS" sessions run well, which I'll be glad to share with you once you figure out why your machine can't deal with booting to a real MS or DR DOS floppy.

Try removing 1 GB of RAM. Some machines have problems with DOS if there's more. Mine works with 2 GB for DOS tasks like Ghosting, but it would never boot to Win 98 with more than 1 GB of RAM.

I had the same issues a few years back.....
I cannot remember exactly what I did but I did download a program from zdnet.com I believe that enabled me to use DOS....
Understand there are some games older ones that just will not work at all hardly....

Now after re-reading what you are saying..try to google your problem such as in the sarch engines type...

How re- enable DOS then your OS...and various other words....

Also is your OS a copy or did you buy it...
I had a friend who had a few corrupted files on his OS because a friend gave him a copy...

Good Luck!!

Thanks. A lot of people have mentioned the problem might be RAM-related. When I can find the time, I'll do some swapping and see what happens.
