Help: new Seasonic S12-600 problem with Asus A7N8X Deluxe

This is my 2nd S12-600.
The 1st one was RMA-ed because I thought it was defective.

But this brand new replacement still doesn't start reliably.
Funny, since I've been using crappy 300W PSU (came with my Fong-kai case) and it's been fine all along.

The problem is the power supply doesn't start like 99% of the time.
It was able to start the computer once or twice, but that's about it. Most of the time, when power button is pushed, fan just swirls and died.

Any suggestions before I RMA this 2nd S12-600?

My system:
  • A7N8X Deluxe 1.04
    AthlonXP 1700+
    1GB Corsair XMS-PC3200C2
    MSI Geforce2 64MB AGP
    160GB Maxtor
    NEC 3540A
    4 Panaflo 80mm fans
... that's it!

Update:
Mobo is 20pin (old mobo)
S12-600 comes with 24-pin, but the 4 pin is detachable. So I detached them and plug the 20-pin to the mobo.

And it works when you just pull that power supply, and put in another one? Or are you changing anything else? Is your mobo a 24-pin, and are you hooking up any / all aux power connectors (4 or 8-pin, etc)?
Tas.

Ahhh. Okay, I have no clue as to the pin out of a Seasonic mobo, but make sure they pins match. (Check your mobo manual to your PSU manual). Also, consider grabbing a 24pin to 20pin converter, and seeing if it works with that... I know you can get them for $6 at frozencpu, so you can probably get them cheaper elsewhere.
Tas.

Tas, the only possible issue is that the S12-600 doesn't have any -5V (per latest ATX specs, bla-bla).
My cheapy old 300W has -5V.

I wonder if this dinosaur A7N8X demands -5V to start reliably?

I'm not positive, but I'd defintely say that it could be a high possiblity of being your culprit.

Why do you have the Seasonic 600w if your cheapy one works? Just wondering. I understand and all, either way. 🙂 I'm having a hell of a time finding the 500w and 600w shipping with FedEx...
Tas.

If you have the Seasonic's fan-RPM-monitoring connector connected to the A7N8X, then disconnect it and try now.

sounds like a grounding issue. pull the mobo out of the case and try.

and my seasonic psu s12-500 is a 24 pin connector only, no +4, no detaching, etc. I have to use a 24->20pin adapter

Between Asus & Seasonic, one of them didn't make a compliant product.
Seasonic manual (a piece of paper, LOL) clearly states that S12-600 can be used with old ATX 20pin mobo by disconnecting the additional 4 pins.
Asus manual warns about the possibility of power-up problem when used with "certain" PSU (+5V & +5VSB concern?)

Anyway, this S12-600 is supposed to go to a new system (MSI Neo4 SLI + 3500+) - I just hope that this problem only happens with this old A7N8X mobo.
If it still doesn't work with MSI Neo4, then I'll start pulling my hair!

-I'll try removing the mobo to see if it's a grounding issue.
-I don't have seasonic Fan monitor connected to mobo (tried it, but it didn't work?)

So far here's what I can come up with:
1. I suspect my Asus A7N8X Deluxe 1.04 may be needing more volt than it should (-5V)
2. I don't know why Seasonic removed -5V from their power supplies.

BTW, I looked at one of those 24-pin to 20-pin ATX converter and it's a straight converter. It only converts the physical connector since 24-pin cable won't go into 20-pin mobo.

Thanks for all the feedbacks, please keep it coming.
Trying to find another poor soul with A7N8X Deluxe 1.04 that has Seasonic S12-600

I don't know why Seasonic removed -5V from their power supplies.
The ATX 2.0 spec does not include -5V. Outta there.

If you have a fan-monitoring wire on that PSU, and it is plugged into a 3-pin header on the mobo, try disconnecting it. A7N8X's can freak out and not POST if they have certain low-RPM fans hooked up, as I found out firsthand. edit: I see you did check for that, never mind 😱

The MSI Neo4 definitely requires a -5V line, see note at bottom of this page: http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=641 (this may not be the exact model you're thinking of, but definitely look into it first!)

Ooh great... just great...
So most likely it won't work with my Neo4 when it's arrived. 🙁

Thanks for checking out the Neo4 specs for me, mechBgon

I don't remember seeing anything about this S12-600 only compatible with intel mobos, just another crap I discovered I guess.

Hey... it's $180 worth of crap from Seasonic!

Seasonic S12s also have problems with DFI LanParty NF4s. I don't know who's wrong here, but I believe it's DFI given their poor history of compatibility.

No. Seasonics are 100% compatible with AMD systems. WTF i s t his thing about INTEL ONLY. I have my S12 running PERFECTLY FINE with my DFI LanParty NF4 Ultra-D. Don't even complain. Seasonic makes awesome power supplies.

Well, I just sent out emails to both Seasonic USA & HQ for this problem.
It IS a problem since this mobo works fine with a cheap a$$ 300W generic PSU (that came free with a case)
It's like having a top of the line BMW that got beaten by an old KIA!

How do you know it's the PSU specifically?

You could say conversely that the Seasonic works with a cheap@$$ motherbobard like an ECS board (yes I tried this morning on my friend's) and not work on your board for example.

But seriously, don't call this a $180 piece of crap and say it's only compatible with Intel, because while I know there are some incompatibilities between my board and my PSU, I'm still running it fine. I know some people with problems, and many without. So?

Dude... stop thread crapping.
You're not helping.

Let me tell you something, if you paid premium and it's not working... it's called BROKEN
Like I said, between Asus & Seasonic, one of them (or both) screwed up. Again, I don't remember seeing any warning that this combo may not work.
So, was I wrong to assume otherwise?

Seasonic Fanboys, go away!

Actually, "broken" means the object in question doesn't work according to it's designer's intentions. There's no indication that either the old motherboard or the new power supply are not working according to their designer's intentions, only that they're not working together. Incompatibility does not equal broken (think of how many people report problems with certain types of RAM on a particular motherboard, for example). Seems like you were asking for trouble by buying a 24-pin PSU for use with a 20-pin motherboard. (And regardless, why do you need a 600W PSU for the system that you described? It's way overkill.)

BTW, I have Seasonics in 2 AMD 64-based systems and have no problems. I don't know why you conclude from your incompatibility issue that Seasonics are only for Intel.

You might want to change your tone the next time you ask for help from folks around here.

Yo dude, what's with my tone?
I think I haven't done anything wrong here, except maybe hurt some seasonic fanboys ego.
If you read the thread, you'll see that this PSU will go with a brand new build - MSI NEO4 SLI Pt, which btw also requires -5V (thanks again MechBgon)
Also check Seasonic website & manual, they clearly say that this 24-pin PSU is compatible with older 20-pin mobos.

This thread started out just fine until fanboys showed up

EDIT:
Found the problem!
It was the mobo...

I jumpered PS_ON# & COM on the Seasonic and it worked. Measured all the voltages and everything seems to be in order.

Thanks everyone.
