I just got an NEC burner and it took me 30 minutes to burn a dvd, it supposed to be 16x. And I'm running Nero CD-DVD speed and its only getting 2X Read!

Maybe it's the media?

Do you have the latest firmware on the drive?

In addition to the firmware, you might want to check the controller it is connected to and make sure it is not running in PIO mode.

Brand can make a difference, some burners are picky about certain media and force it to run at slower speeds.

Also the PIO mode is a good thing to check - be sure the IDE channel is running UDMA

You can check (at least with Nero) how fast your burner will burn to a specified media when you pop in the DVD and go to the burn screen. The options for burn speed will show what the drive will allow with that media. As for checking PIO/DMA go to (In windows XP) Device manager (System properties) and look for "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers". Double-click the controller your burner is on (if you dont know check both). Click Advanced Settings, and make sure "DMA If available" is selected under Transfer mode. The box below that will show you what that particular drive is running at now. If its at PIO and you change to DMA, restart and all should be better! :)

Ok I don't think it worked , I just burned an audio CD and it took me 6 minutes. It said it was burning at 48x but isn't 6 minutes a long time for 48x?

OK I just found something. In Nero Info Tool it says DMA is off but I have it turn on in the device manager . So it is still using PIO, should I just take out my old cd rom drive? Or switch it to slave and make the burner master?
