(i'm gonna repost this in CPU's just cuz I don't know if it's a CPU or Mobo problem)

I just build my new system... and it doesn't boot... Here's what I did... (or at least me and a friend). It is a Asus A7N8X Deluxe, with 512mb Crucial DDR2700. I have the ThermalTake Volcano 9 with the Cool Mod attatched. It has a 350 Watt Power Supply.

Anyways... we installed the processor in the mobo, with thermal paste and the HSF... the RAM, and installed it into the case... Plugged it in, with the fans and everything.... When I turned it on, all the fans turn on, the case lights go on... but after about 5-8 seconds, it shuts down all by itself...

When we removed the processor and turned it on... the fans turn on and stay on, it doesn't shut down at all.

None of the times we turn it on did the motherboard "beep."

Could it be the mobo or the CPU? or even the RAM? I've heard people having problems with Crucial 2700... but I thought it was fixed... Any clues?

Im taking a big shot in the dark here, but hey, its not working now is it? ;)

Does that mobo require you to have a fan attached to the cpu fan header on the mobo b4 it will boot?
(the mobo may think the cpu fan is dead therefore wont boot to protect the cpu)

Is your cpu fan attached to the power supply or the header on the mobo?
sorry if thats a stupid question, im not that familiar with the ThermalTake Volcano 9 with the Cool Mod attatched

Also, if that isnt it, almost everytime Ive ever powered on a system and just the fans came on with no beeps, its usually the cpu needs to be reseated or the cpu is dead.

remove mobo from case and reset it.
no beeps no nothing except maybe case fan usually means an electrical shortage of some
kind...make sure ur mobo is seated properly in case and screwed in properly.

One thing u can try is to NOT screw the mobo onto case...just install devices, cables and let mobo
'hang' vertically with just base on the case-bottom. If that works, u know its coz the mobo was touching
some bare metal and shorting. Newer mobos will try to protect your mobo+stuff from frying by
not powering up.

Clear CMOS if you havent already done that. Leave it unplugged a few minutes before rebooting. Or/and then take mb out of case with essentials hooked up. try 1 stick of ram then the other, only use pwr plug, or even better just short pwr pin headers to start pc.

Another person had the exact same problem recently. It turned out he installed the heatsink backwards and it was not making good contact with the CPU. The thermal protection kicked in and turned off the motherboard. Just a thought...

Just hope you didn't short something (motherboard), I had symptoms just like that with a client's computer. I had the guy take it to a shop and it turns out the motherboard shorted when he put some new ram in and he paid $400 for it to be fixed.

But.. the question is...

since I tried to boot it repeatedly, wouldn't the shutdown time get shorter since the CPU was already hot? Beacuse it stayed at a consistant 5-8 seconds...

You are probably really stupid, you don't even know what type of hardware you actually have.
Anyway, it's the mobo, and I'm not going to tell you what the problem is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, that was probably the most useless and non-helpful post ever...

But kind of funny, since... I have to know what's in my computer since all the boxes are still sitting down next to me.

Okay, not the MOST useless, slightly more helpful than "in before lock"
