I'm building new computer (asus p5rd1-v mb, intel 3.6 ghz). When I turn it on it keeps shutting off after a min or so. Could it be over heating? CPU at 170 degress, mb at 90 something.... I have cpu fan for it

Could it be a power problem? What size of PSU do you have? Is it new or is it old? Can you try replacing the PSU with a known working one to see if your current one is broken?

That definitely sounds like an overheating problem. If those numbers are accurate, your CPU is running at 82 degrees Celsius and the motherboard temperature is 32 degrees Celsius.

In a warm room, 32 degrees Celsius is possible for a motherboard temperature although it is relatively high.

82 degrees Celsius is VERY high for a CPU and is almost certainly the cause of your problem. With the power disconnected, remove the heat sink and make sure that the thermal pad/paste is properly applied to the heat sink. Then reseat the heat sink and make sure it is making a solid connection across the full surface of the CPU core (you can tell if it is seated properly if there is an impression of the whole CPU core in the thermal pad/thermal paste on the heat sink).
