Hi, I have two computers at home and I decided to network them. I have cat5 wires running to my house (less than 100 feet each). One end of each wire is attached to the wall plate and the other end i crimped myself and plugs into the 10/100 switch. Now, my old computer is running Windows Nt 4.0 and has a 10/100 SOHO network card. When i plug this into any of the wall plates, the light on the switch turns on. This tells me that that I have connected the cat5 wires properly. Now when i try to plug in my new computer running 2000 pro into these sockets, (DLINK 10/100 adapter) the lights on the switch flash, and the lan connection is not detected on the computer. So what I did was bring the two computers together and plug each into the switch. They saw each other and I set up the network fine. So I can conclude that nothing is wrong with my small cat5 cables going from the comp to the wall. My network cards are working fine because the cable modem works perfectly on both. So then I tried plugging my new computer back into the sockets and it did not detect the lan. Sometimes when i fiddle around with the settings of the dlink card, (making it 10mb half full duplex etc) the connection is detected for a split second and then turns off. Then I thought that maybe my dlink is faulty. So i put in a SMC card 10/100 and I get the same problem.

So basically my new computer can connect to the switch and see the other computer when they are near by. But it cant connect to the switch through the wall socket. Can somebody please give me any suggestions as to what I can do because I am really tired of moving my computers around. I ve spent alot of time on this.

Thanks for your time.

What is the order of your connections at the jack and the connectors?

If you didn't follow the proper pair-order, chances are that's the problem.

Do a search. There many posts on this topic.

Good Luck
