Help...Netbeui probably, can't get new system to see workgroup

Hi,

I've got a small LAN (11 systems) at the wife's office (animal hospital). All are running Win98 (or Win98SE). All have TCP protocol loaded (with No Bindings) for internet access via DSL line (static IPs). All have Netbeui Protocol loaded (bound to File/Print Sharing and MS Network login) because the Vet Software only runs under that. They are all configured as a workgroup (using "workgroup" as the group) and can all see each other fine. Just bought a new Dell Optiplex 260, which I threw out the Windows XP home that came with it, and started from scratch with Win98SE and loaded all drivers.

It can cruise the internet fine with TCP/IP. But can't see the workgroup using Netbeui even though I swear everything is configured identical to the Network Settings on the other machines. I gave it a unique name, put it in "workgroup", added Netbeui with the same bindings but it only sees itself using Network Neighborhood (under its own workgroup). None of the other machines see it even though its on the same lan.

Any ideas...wasted 2 hours trying to figure out what should be a simple 5 minute job putting it in the workgroup?

Thanks,

Steve

So you installed win98 on the new machine. And you have set the workgroup to match. Set all the protocols the same. You are using MS login as your client.
Now are you loging in or just hitting cancel? Don't you have to log in? Also you do have file/print sharing on right?

Remy,

Yes, yes, yes, and yes to the first sentence.

I don't have a password set (on any of the machines), but I did hit okay (instead of cancel), so I am "logging in with the MS Client login". Just for grins I hit cancel, but same result

Jack,

I don't see anything obvious that says, use this one as a default (over the others). I think I've got everything setup per that FAQ, although I'm not positive I have anything shared on the new machine it still should be able to see the shares on all the other systems (like all the other systems can).

let me know if there something obvious you have to do to make it the "default"

thanks,
Steve

Control Panel / network / NetBEUI Properties. Click on the Advance Tab down to the left Check.

After checking NetBEUI, just to make sure look at the similar Advance Tab of TCP/IP, and Uncheck. Reboot.

You can pray during Reboot sometimes it helps. J/K!
