If it were my son I wouldn't let him on the Internet for a long time lol.

Changing the Google preferences won't work for long. Kids aren't stupid, trust me. He'll notice in a month or so. If you look, it even says at the top of the screen what the search setting is and he'll know you changed something!

I just tell my kids that I can tell where they go on the internet and will dissable it if I find anything. So far no problems.

Any other suggestions on software? I have a friend who needs some way to block these sites as well. Their 13 year old was looking at stuff, not terrible in and of itself... except for the fact the younger girls use the computer as well

Not that I disagree, nor do they - they just asked me for any helpful programs I might know of. Since I really don't - figured I'd ask for suggestions (blocking porn on my computer would be.... counterproductive?).

tell your kid to get off the damn computer and go read a book or play outside
