Hello all,
I really need some help, the problem is kinda vague, but at least give me some options as what i can do here. For christmas, i got a new case, keyboard and mouse to finnish building my new system. Well, got everything installed on the motherboard, and all the board put it. When i put in a hard drive to install win 98 on it, everytime i get to the click continue, the computer freezes. I tried it about 7-8 times but it froze every time. So, i thougt no problem. i'll just put the hard drive in my opther computer, install win98, and plug it in and let it find all the new boards. Well, got win 98 installed on my other machine, and put it into my new comp. Turned it on, win 98 started to boot up, and when it was locating the drivers for the new boards, it locked up. I kept rebooting until finaaly i got to a teal screen. But it won't go any further. It locks up. And some times, it lockes up at the win 98 start up screen. I have tried a few different hard drives, but they all do the same thing. (the hard drives are all made by the same manufacturer).
But everything is fine until it gets to the boot up ein98 part, Ram check is dine, locates the hard drive and cd rom, and floppy.
OK, now the other stuff. The hard drive(s) i am trying to install win 98 on, on the new comp are all made by maxtor. The motherboard is a plain asus P2B. And it has a p3 550 mhz chip in it.
Any ideas?? If so be specific. ALso i was going to clear the cmos, but it says to short the 2 soldiers on the mobo. it diesn't have pins to short, just 2 little bumps. How do i short it out?
Any help greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks!
Happy Holidays!
Josh

You can also take out the CMOS battery and accomplish the same thing. It looks like a slightly oversized watch battery. Leave it out for 5 minutes, then replace it and boot up.

Sounds like a BIOS configuration error. Read the motherboard manual and enable/disable appropiate settings. (i.e. if the board had integrated video/audio and you have a separate card for that)

System 1 = your new system.
system 2 = the you are putting the drive in to install OS.

If system 1 and 2 don't have the same motherboard Model you can have problems.

I have upgraded the motherboard in several systems with no major problems using same drive and not reinstalling the OS on the drive. But when I upgraded my K7M to my A7V this summer I had to format and reinstall. Got lots of BSOD during startup. I don't remember all of the details just remember spending like an hour trying to get it to boot (stable).
Finally retreated to format c:.

I done the same upgrade for friend A7V from Asus P5AB and was able to detect and get everything working, as I recall it took about 5 or 6 reboots. I did go into device manager in safe mode before upgrade removing drive controller, video adapter, etc. Anything that is differen't between system 1 and system 2

An idea about your new system. Is your new keyboard and/or mouse USB? I recall hearing of problems on install of win98 using USB versions. Try using ps/2 versions of mouse/keyboard on your new system and install OS using new system.

UPDATE:
I put some older ram i had from my other system (the ram is siemmens cas 2-2-2, 66 mhz) It wonj't post at 100 fsb
I put the w 32 meg pc 66 chips in my new system, and it booted up fine! no lock ups! The only provblem i have now is instead of my processor being 550, with the 66 mhz fsb, it's now a PIII, 366 (that's what it says at boot up.)
Any ideas why this thing won't run at the supposed to be 100 mhz fsb?
