Help needed with Volcano 9 HSF

Hey guys

I have a Volcano 9 with an AXP 2400+ with an EPoX 8RDA+ Motherboard, and I can't get the fan control to work. I've hooked it up as the instructions say on the website, however the speed of the fan stays high and annoyingly noisy. Sometimes when I turn it down, it goes down for a second, but gets noisy again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, or suggestions on a better HSF 🙂

Thanks,
Massonite

do u have BOTH the temperature sensor and the fan controller connected?

if so, i think you're only supposed to have one connected.

i'm sure 48 dB is loud enough to annoy anyone!

most people would recommend the thermalright slk-800, or the sk-7 for the budget-minded
check it out at svc.com

Yes, I have the temp sensor and fan control. I couldn't really care less if the temp sensor is there, so I could try removing it. Thanks for the tip.

As for the fan, I wouldn't want a fan that's no good for overclocking. I want one that's quiet and can overclock nicely. You know, good bang for my buck. Do any of those 2 fans meet those requirements?

Another thing... what's the lowest RPM I should set the fan to so that it won't have a detrimental effect on performance? I'm kinda iffy about setting it to the lowest setting, as I don't want to wake up one morning with a toasty mobo... lol

i'm using the slk-800 heatsink and a zalman zm-f1 fan now.

39cfm@34db gives me 33C idles, 38C load

i'm looking to replace it with a panaflo fan tho

at lowest setting your fan pushes around 21 cfm.
it's not great cooling, but not detremential.

load up a temperature sensing program such as MotherboardMonitor or SpeedFan
and find the noise/temperature ratio that's right for you

I'd suggest a better heatsink. 😛 Something like even the SK6+ is better if used with a decent fan (many 80mm fans will fit it). An SK7, SLK800 or AX7 are even better solutions.

Even on low that Tt fan is too loud for me. The V9 is plain poorly contructed too. Good luck removing it, I almost had to use a crow bar. :Q But as far as the lowest speed, I'd use the highest you can handle. For me that would mean off. 😀

I'm kinda new at cooling/overclocking lingo, what's CFM? I'll download MBM and check it out.

I'm going to try and disconnect the heat sensor and see if that works. I thought you could use them all at once. Perhaps I'm wrong? I guess I'll soon find out. 🙂

lol, I've always had trouble removing a Tt HSF. I had a Dragon Orb 3, and let me tell you, that was a pain in the butt to get off!!

I'll definately look into the Thermalright heatsinks and try to get myself a nice fan to match. I'll note everyone's suggestions and take a list downtown and see what I can get at the store. 🙂

Wish me luck!!

Well, I disconnected the heat sensor and sure enough, the speed control is working!!

Thank you for the tip Batman5177, I really appreciate it. Now I just have to get myself MBM installed to check out the ratio that works best without wreaking havoc on my box.

When I ran a Volcano 9 I was able to run it at 3k Rpm's..any higher was just added noise, and added NO better cooling.

Tuff

I have it at a tolerable level of noise now, but I can't tell how fast the fan is going or how cool it is. MBM isn't showing me any readings. Any similar programs that may be useful?

It was ridiculous last night, but now it seems to be fine.

im a newbie, just started to forum and now i found out volcano 9 sucks, but because i dont really have money right now, can any help me? at first i didn't mind the noice level but now it gets to me and all. can anyone tell me around what rpm i should have it run at for sufficient performance and quietness?
