Hi,

I have an old Dell OptiPlex GX280 SFF, I have identified the chipset as the Intel 915GV

On the supported CPU's it says I can run upto 3.8ghz P4 HT 5xx and 3.6ghz 6xx

I am currently running a 651 3.4ghz cedar mill core but when I install a 661 3.6ghz the machine does a self test and I am left with the power button showing amber and the CPU cooler is running, this CPU was SL96H (C1)

I have tried another 661 3.6ghz CPU SL94V (B1) I get the same issue, if I put the 3.4ghz 651 back in SL9KE (D0) the machine is fine.

Everything tells me I can runs a 3.6ghz cedar mill or a 3.8ghz Prescott, what is the problem, is it the stepping code ???

Prev is was running a P4 HT 3.2ghz 640.

I am a bit confused, now I understand the cpu I am using now uses on 65w due to the stepping code, the P4 HT 3.2ghz 640 is 84w, could the issue and I know its only 1w be that the two 661's I have tried with 85w is to much for the machine as the vid card I am using does munch power.

I might try removing the vid card to see if this make a diff.

Any advice on this would be great, thank you.

I just gave away my oldest Optiplex, my GX260 MT (not SFF) with the famous clam tower.

I will delve, but my take is you are being too ambitious with that board forget, the stock PSU in yr SFF system re the GPU.

CPU Upgrade Options

  • The Optiplex GX280 supports Intel's LGA 775 CPU socket format. At the time of purchase, consumers could opt for the more powerful Intel Pentium 4 540 CPU operating at 3.2 GHz with a 1 MB Level 2 cache. If you are seeking to upgrade your Optiplex GX280's CPU, you can change your current CPU to any Intel processor using the LGA 775 socket. When upgrading to a more powerful CPU, you should also consider a new heat sink and fan to keep it cool.

Edit: http://www.ebay.com/bhp/lga-775-cpu-quad-core

The Cedar Mill U R having trouble with is single core? It seems you can do better with this older system!

Most likely PSU needs an upgrade, or BIOS needs updating.

Have you tried clearing the CMOS after installing the new CPU(s)?

Excellent! Thing about Optis, even the SFFs....they are engineered well and built to last. I speak from first hand experience with, now 3, tho only the big MTs.

Enjoy!
