Note:**I searched first** I may have searched for the wrong thing but I did try to find the answer.

I'm running WInXP with all the updates as far as I know.

At the dorms I used a Netgear router to connect to the internet, worked like a charm. Then I came home and tried to connect to the internet through a Linksys router, nada, zip, zilch, nothing. I added a new connection using the wizard and when it got to the configuring you connection part I tried to find the internet for about 8mins but failed. I've made the work group name the same as all the other machines in the house but to no avail(can't even see them on the network). Currently there are 3 computers using the internet through the Linksys router. My younger brother's, my youngest brother's, and my dad's computers. Running ME, 98, and 95 respectively. All i wanna do is be able to play CS. Please, help me.

Thx
Brian J.

BTW-if you need any additional info please let me know.

1) Are the link lights on and cables run properly?
2) Dynamic or static IP's?
3) what's your gateway set at?

Type Ipconfig at the command prompt.
That said, it sounds like the end user rather than XP having the problems ;)

Things to check:
IP Address - Is it being allocated a correct IP
If so, can you ping the other machines Ip addresses?

The windows XP firewall is the most common cause of problems like this - make sure it's disabled on all your network interfaces.

Why are you creating a new connection at home?

First try to figure out where the problem.

Click START > RUN > type cmd (in 2000/XP) or command (in 9x) and hit enter

A command prompt should pop up.
Type ping <linksys ip address> (usually 192.168.1.1)

It should give you back the time it takes to ping the router for five packets. If it can ping the router, then your DNS settings are wrong. This shows that you can connect to computers by their IP address but not by their DNS name (like www.yahoo.com).

Check to make sure that Windows XP is not bridging the network adapters. I have a Firewire port (which XP treats as NIC) and a NIC and it bridged them after running the wizard. Couldn't use the network at all afterwards.

Go to Control Panel > Network Connections and highlight your connection, right click, and select properties.

This is where you can change the settings for the network.

Make sure that TCP/IP is installed in this list. If it is, double click it and select obtain an IP address automatically and obtain DNS servers automatically.

That's about all I can think of. Check device manager to see if there is anything wrong with the card otherwise.

I tried everything said and still a no go. When I try to ping the router I get host unreachable. TCP/IP is installed and everything is set to auto. Nothing is bridged and I know the card is working because i just came back from a lan party at a friends house. All I had to do was plug my computer into the hub and I was up and running. Hom is the only place sofar I can't get this thing working at.

I checked the the ipconfig /all command and this is what I got:

Host Name: My computers name
Primay DNS Suffix: nothing, its blank
Mode Type: hybrid
IP Routing: no
WINS Proxy: no

Connection-specific DNS Suffix: nothing, its blank
Description: NetGear FA311 Fast Ethernet Adapter
Physical Address: ask if needed
DCHP: yes
Auto-Cinfig: yes
Auto-Config IP: ask if needed
Subnet Mask: ask if need
Default Gateway: nothing, its blank

I have also tried to following to no avail:

Connecting the computer to the cable modem directly
Connecting the computer to my Netgear router to the modem
Connecting the computer to the Linksys router to the modem
Connecting the computer to the Netgear router to the Linksys router to the modem

I'm to the point where I'm thinking about either paying someone to come fix it or ordering DSL. Too bads I gots zippo casho =(

assuming the 3 computers already hooked upto the linksys router is configured dhcp, have you checked the router web admin page and see what the settings are for dhcp. my linksys dhcp page, lets you pick the starting ip address, and then the # of dhcp users. maybe that's set for only 3 pcs. which is why you're not able to get on the internet. if that's the case, set it to 4 to include your pc.

if the 3 pcs have static ips, then you either have to enable dhcp on the linksys (make sure the starting ip address doesnt overlap one of the other 3 pcs that have static ips), or manually configure the tcp/ip settings (ip address, gateway, dns servers).

edit: the question earlier, about whether dynamic or static, i dont think they meant your internet connection, but the LAN. check the 3 computers tcp/ip properties and see if they're set to automatically get an ip, or it's set manually.

when you do ipconfig, what's your ip? didnt notice it in the previous post.. sounds to me that dhcp is disabled.. and since you're set to get a ip from the dhcp server (router) and it's disabled or something, youre probably getting an APIPA ip of 169.254.x.x .. and the router is 192.168.1.1, it's not able to contact the router..

well, check that stuff out. hope i make any sense. it's late.. good luck. :)
