HELP NEEDED URGENTLY ON UNCLES NETWORK

setup:

smc7008abr (i think i know its an 8 port smc router)
dsl
xp laptop, xp desktop, 95 laptop, 98 desktop (needs reinstall), xp pro server.

ok so i get home and all was gravy before i left.

now about 2 days after i get home. i get an email from them saying the xp desktop no longer can access the server. so to check this i have them try the laptop in the same port (wall sockets w/ cat 5running to terminated ends in router) the desktop was in, using the same cord. the laptop works.

have my aunt check to see if the auto ip is on, and it is.

it will not see the server on mshome. and the mapped network drive will not connect. however everything is gravy on the laptop no matter where she plugs in. what all should i go through?

give me direct steps if possible of how to give them tech support in good steps. i think i will have her restart the server, and see what happens then. its been runnin for 2 weeks so who knows what might have happened, but its a good start.

if that doesnt work, what would be your next steps?

I'm betting on "Your cabling sucks."

But that's just me; I blame everything on cabling (especially cabling done by non-pros to save money).

Maybe a flakey NIC. More likely the cabling.

well go search for some of my other threads and see what sh!t i had to deal with. thanks though.

Why would my cabling only work with the laptop then? and cabling can randomly go bad?

yes there is a software firewall on the desktop. i will tell them to disable that and see what happens, im not sure how to disable it, as i did not install it. i believe it is mcafee not sure though.

Flakey connections are frequently intermittent (works / doesn't work depending on the position of the cable). It could be the laptop NIC is more tolerant, or the desktop NIC is less tolerant.

Glitchy problems generally fall into two or three areas: Cabling/connections, power, or noise sources.

Good Luck
