I have a fair amount of home videos that i would like to transfer to my pc for some mild editing and then transfer to DVD. However the majority of the videos reside on VHS tapes, and I am having a hard time trying to figure out how I want to transfer these.
Here is what I have:
Sony DCR-TVR103, old yes, but it still serves it purposes, I have a fair amount of tapes that I would like to transfer. These videos shouldn't pose an issue has the camera has a mini-firewall port that I can easily connect to a firewire card(which has yet to be purchased).
A dozen or so VHS tapes, and a few 8mm tapes (non-digital) from a previous camcorder that I no longer have, and this is where I am have my issues. How to get these videos to the computer? I have visited newegg and looked at their capture devices, but I haven't found the one that seems to be the overwhelmingly choice. So I need some help.
1) Does any one have any recommendations on capture devices? I would prefer not to spend a lot of money $100-$200 would be my target range.
2) One thought I had was to use\borrow\buy a VHS to DVD converter, convert my library to DVD, and then rip the files to my computer. A round about way but it would work, my only concern is the double copy and fear of degradation of the video. Not to mention depending on the price of a good one, it may better to get a capture device.
3) The Sony Camcorder that I have has RCA ports and a S video port that can function as both inputs and outputs. So I was thinking I have a few blank tapes that I can use to record video from the VCR to the camcorder, and then transfer to the computer via the firewire port. I have 1 concern and 1 mild annoyance, video degradation (due to making a copy of a copy) and the fact the VHS tapes are about 2 hours and the camcorder tapes are only 1 hour, minor detail, but somewhat annoying.
4) Can I use the Camcorder as the capture device? This would be my preferred method, though the manual was no help in this regard and Google (more specifically my horrible search engine skills) wasn't much help either. My biggest concern is that the camera is 10+ years old so I'm not sure if Sony had this in mind when the designed the thing. On the 1 in 1,000,000 shot that someone has this camcorder or one similar....Can this be done?
5) Am I missing something?
