Help needed: Swapping Duron 600 for T-Bird 1.1

I have a Duron 600 and would like to swap it for a TBird 1.0 or 1.1 (depending on what I can find). So...there are a couple of specific questions:

1) Would it be better just to OC the Duron and save the ~$70 on the new processor? (ie: does the extra cache on the TB make a huge difference)

2) Would I need to purchase another fan/heatsink? (ie: are the OEM fans compatible).

3) Currently using a 300w PS. Given the specs below, should I get a new power supply? (ie: stability issues...Also will get a Promise 133 card and better video card in about 6 months)

4) Any recommended guides to upgrading a Socket A?

FIC AZ11 (please don't laugh to hard...)
Voodoo 4 4500 agp (again...try not to laugh...)
Acer 48x & Phillips CDRW
Maxtor 40gb 7200rpm ata 133
384 PC133 Samsung/Crucial mix of RAM

Any help would be appreciated! I'm not too-too up on the hardware scene these days...

IMHO, a more better upgrade for you would be a Morgan core 1.0g Duron. You can find 'em for less than $45 shipped. The 300w should be enough for the Duron. You could also upgrade that V4 to a Radeon LE pretty cheaply as well. Hope this helps.

save your money for a new DDR platform. If your gonna buy anything get a cheapo morgan and OC that. You'll notice a difference with a 1.1...why a 1.1 though for 5 bucks more you get a 1.4 Tbird. You might need a new HSF if you do that also... Again I'd save up for a DDR setup, your video card isn't half bad, I'd say with a DDR platform it would be pretty nice, I used a TNT2 with my setup for a little bit just to see what it was like.

Excellent, thanks for the advice to both of you. I'll probably just OC this puppy, keep it for another year, and put it to pasture after that. Besides, I'll get some good experience w/ overclocking.

BTW, anyone know any good guides on OCing a Duron? I've found a couple. One says you need to unlock the bridges w/ a graphite pencil, then raise the voltage in the BIOS. The other guide just tells you to raise the voltage.

Thanks again!

Sounds a good decision. You can put Duron overclocking in search here, other forums, and Google for tons of answers. Good luck.

What I would do is, unlock the multipliers, put it down to 5, and put FSB to 133, see how that runs...try to get 150 FSB if you can get that up the multipler till it becomes unstable. If it does become unstable, increase voltage and try again. Your memory should handle 150 FSB, and your MB should have a 1/4 PCI divider...there might be a jumper to select 100 ot 133 FSB processors, make sure you put it to 133 before you set 150 in the BIOS...otherwise you'll get no post most likely. if you can't get much over 133 FSB leave it at that and up mulitplier until unstable, then increase voltage and try again. If your temps go above 55c at anytime it's probably too hot and the temperature alone will causes errors let alone the OC'ed speeds. 55c is my general rule, sometimes it's as small as 40c somtimes as much as 65c! OCing is not a science it's an art...just takes practice.
