I have tried to install the latest nvidia driver (185.85) with no success. To make a long story short: I need to get Vista64 ultimate to stop installing the driver on its own after I reboot. I have tried all the various ways of uninstalling the old driver, but Vista keeps trying to reinstall it after I reboot. When it boots to the desktop it shows a window that says it is installing the graphics driver, but it does not install Nvidia Control Panel, it asks click here to finish installing the driver. No matter what I do it insists on installing the old driver. I tried to go ahead and install 185.85 but I get a "version mismatch" when I try to open Nvidia Control panel. Any ideas? Thanks.

I never had Vista pull that on me.... And I've changed a couple different cards, and blownout/reinstalled drivers almost monthly...

It sounds like you may not be removing all of the older iteration - Try something like Driver Cleaner and make sure you get it all.

Yea, I tried Driver Cleaner and another one like it to no avail. I even tried the cleaners in safe mode.

Hmm.. OK..

Download the new/proper driver, then unplug your computer from the web so it can't reach out. Restart. Then when it offers to find the new driver, cancel and install the file you downloaded.

Appreciate the help. But Vista does not offer me a choice, it installs the old driver without the ability to stop it. To be precise, a window opens saying it is installing the driver with nothing to click on to stop it. Then, after that is done, another window comes up offering two choices: to finish installing or wait until later. I think this is trying to install Nvidia's Control Panel. Oh, and I have tried it without web access.

Go into device manager and uninstall the device and choose the option to 'delete the driver'. Then after the reboot install the new driver.

Weird, I wonder what driver is getting auto-installed then...

Well, I suppose I should update. I finally got to where Vista would reboot in the standard vga mode. Then I tried to install the new driver, where the install window said there was a missing .dll and an application I believe is the Physx stuff. I believe the new driver finally installed but not Nvidia Control Panel or Physx. I have done all kinds of things to install this driver but have given up. I just installed the last 182 driver.
