Help needed: My laptop stutters...

Ok here is the laptop I have: IBM T30, P4 1.6m, 256 MB ram, 40 GB FAT32 hard drive, Mobility 7500 w/16 MB video ram, WinXP Pro SP1, and Visual Studio .NET.

My Problem: While performing trivial tasks such as browsing or scrolling through webpages and documents, the pointer would skip from one place to the next (not the normal "smooth" transition). This was the first thing I noticed that was odd. Now when I use the computer with WinAMP or Window's Media Player playing an mp3 in the background, the music skips or "stutters" and it is quite annoying. I thought it was only when I use the mouse but now it also happens when I type like now.

The stuttering does not occur when I am not using the keyboard or mouse although the problem occurs more often with the mouse. I have the eye candy turned off for WinXP and moved the page file to the D Drive recently since on the C there was only 500 megabytes left (stupid IT department in my school set it up like that).

Good god this is rage-raising, anyone have ideas on how to solve this?

Seems like heavy swapfile usage usage. Bring up task manager by CTRL+ALT+DEL and check the CPU and memory usage.

My bet is you should upgrade the RAM at this early stage in diagnosis.

That's not really helping the guy.... while your at it you might as well say buy a new laptop

or maybe he should just turn it off... That'll fix the stuttering ;)

(J/P don't take any offense)
