Help needed in choosing a processor

Hello everyone, currently I am in a bind choosing a socket 939 processor. I have the choice of FX-57 and Opteron 165. Which one will scale better in current day to day applications and games? Currently I am using a 3200+ and it is somewhat very laggy in cut scenes for last remnant and a little slow with mass effect and prototype. Will any of these processors help?
 
Not really. They're still single core CPUs that are marginally faster- most games now take advantage of at least 2 cores. For a cheap upgrade you may have to look for an X2 939 CPU (check your motherboard can take it) if not, the overwhelmingly better option is new system altogether.
 
Yes, at todays prices, you can probably get an X2 AM2+, keep your memory, and a motherboard, possibly for kless than an X2 939 processor, maybe nto much over $100 total.

I believe the opty is a dualie? so i take it the opty is somewhat better?

changing the mother board is not an option atm actually, i have the option of getting one of both for the price of a lunch that's why i'm even considering of changing.
 
If they opty is a dual then that will be the better option- make sure your motherboard can support a new CPU, you may need download a new Bios and flash it, check your manufacturers website.
 
Yes - the Opteron 165 is a dual-core chip running at 1.8GHz. I've got one in a Shuttle beside my desk. Nice chip, overclocks well.

As Sylvanas pointed out - make sure your motherboard will support the processor before you get it. And if it needs a BIOS flash to support the chip - do the flash before replacing the cpu.
 
I ran an Opty 165 for 2 years @ 2.4GHz. Good chip, but I sold the system a month ago to pay for some other things.
