help needed from audiophiles!! help me pick a receiver

Hey guys. I'm looking for a receiver to start building a home theater setup. I'm looking for some advice on what kind of receiver to buy first off. A couple of features I'm looking for is DTS/Dolby Digital output, as well as independent rear channel volumes.

Which brands are better, and at what prices can I expect to find what I want? I am of course looking for the best bang for the buck. Thanks for any info you can give me.

Onkyo and Harman Kardon are my two favorite brands. Personally, I own a Harman Kardon right now, but I will soon be upgrading. Haven't decided what to get next though.

Hmm, I think if you look you could maybe find last-year's model for a lot of those brands for about $300. That would be your best bet. I was a Pioneer fanboy for the longest time but it seems they've taken the low-road (unless you buy their Elite line which is $$$$$$).

Expect to spend at least 300 to get something that you'll enjoy for more than a few months. You may need to wait another month and save up more.

If you don't already have speakers then you can get the Onkyo Home Theater in a Box for $499 at circuit city. It sounds great. They also sell the receiver separate for $299.

If you can do $300, then you can save a few months, and come up with $500. Then you can order this, and be happy you didn't settle for less.

I am getting a DENON 883 (same as 1803) from nxgen.com for under $350 ahipped. IMO the best bamng for the buck out there.

Yeah....that NXGen deal is a hot one...if I didn't already buy a Pioneer VSX-D811S I would jump on that one.

i got the hk avr320 from fry's on friday for 299 😀

if i didn't sleep for so dmaned long, i could've gotten it for 270, oh well =(

The best thing you can get for under $250 is a

Yamaha RXV-430

The receiver with the most features for that price would be

Kenwood VR-6050

Others worth considering

Onkyo TX-SR500
Denon AVR-1602
Denon AVR-1603
Denon AVR-1403
