Help needed for dual booting

I have partitioned my HDD into 2 parts and have loaded W98SE on C:\ and want to load W2K on D:\ However, the W2K keeps overwriting the W98SE (by going onto the C:\ drive). I tell it (in the W2K start up screen), "No" to upgrading W98 (ie I want a separate W2K installation), but it still goes ahead and loads into C:\ anyway. What am I doing wrong?

Are you installing Win2k out of Win98 ? If so, you can't specify the drive you want it to be installed on.

But if you install Win2k from the DOS mode, the installation routine is gonna ask you where you want to have it - either c: or d:

Yes. I am booting up into W98. Then putting in the W2K CD and running setup. (It seemed so convenient!) But, you're right, at no time do I get a screen asking where I want to put the W2K. (If I did, I'd answer d:\)
Please, a little more help. How would you suggest I go about boooting in DOS mode. And what should I look out for.
Thanks. I appreciate your help.

Try booting off the Win98 CD. Load the CD drivers, then go into the \tools\oldmsdos\ folder of the Win98 CD, load smartdrv (makes the Win2k install a lot faster), then put in the Win2k CD and install it to d: (run winnt - it's in \i386 on the Win2k CD)

The routine should find another OS on C:, therefore it should install the bootloader and configure it for Win98/Win2k.

Voila !

Looking on the net, it appears that some sites say you can load W2K from within W98 (and then select where to put the second OS), other sites say you should run the W2K CD from a DOS prompt, and yet other sites don't specify.
What's the right answer?
Thanks..

a co-worker of mine did this yesterday. he installed 2000 while in 98, are you sure it never gets to the screen to ask you were you want to install. (you have to pick, clean install, not upgrade). that should be working.

Thanks for the help. I have tried so many things, now I am confused.
However, I will try loading the way you suggest and, hopefully, all will be fine.
