Help needed for CPU decision - AMD and MS future OS

Hi:

Are current Athlon 64's (Socket 939) with either the "Winchester" or the "Venice" core MS Windows LONGHORN-ready (when it ever ships) ???

In other words, are the current Athlon's mentioned "ready" for Longhorn or any 64 bit O.S. MS might finally release???

I know they have "64" in their name, duh ! but......

....I just want to make sure before I order my CPU tonight (an ATHLON 64 "Winchester" Core) that it will be 64 bit O.S. ready.

BTW, I already know the basic differences between the "Winchester" and the "Venice" core like the lower operation voltage, SSE3 intructions set, cooler CPU temp, etc... of the "Venice" core vs. the "Winchester" core.

I don't think I can hold out for the availability of the "Venice" to increase and their prices to decrease so that's why I need to know about my "Winchester" purchase and future 64 bit M.S. O.S.'s .

Thanks for your input !

Greg

Either will work on the 64bit XP, so I am sure it will work on Longhorn. Keep in mind I wouldn't expect to see Longhorn until late 2006 at the earliest.

The last I heard (which has been a couple of months) the scheduled release had been pushed back to early to mid-2006 - now they're talking LATE 2006 ???

Typical Microsoft; whatever happened to the 2005 release date once promised for Longhorn ???

Microsoft !!! Got to love to hate 'em !!!!

You should be more worried about your video card if you're looking to meet Longhorn's minimum specs for all its GUI goodies.

A Winchester will be just fine. The vid card in your Rig may not be fine, but any of the modern ATI or Nvidia 6xxx series cards should be okay(6600 and up at least).
