HELP NEEDED desperatly: compaq and windows....don't want to work together

Hey guys, here's my problem, my friend got a new compaq presario a week ago and it had Win ME installed...After one day windows got screwed up and didn't want to boot at all, so I reformated the drive and tried installing Win 98 SE on it. While windows tried to install it kept giving me errors like "suwin.exe error" and others that I don't recall. I also tried installing Win2K on it and it gave me errors too without installing it. So I took the hard drive out of that compaq and put it into my machine and installed win 98SE on it...After that I took the drive and put it into the compaq again and tried booting...Now when it tries to boot it says "While initializing device CONFIGM: Windows protection error, restart your computer" When I boot in safe mode it says "Error: HIMEM.SYS has detected unreliable XMS memory at address 0038AFD0. XMS driver not installed" and hangs....I tried booting from a floppy under DOS and everything is fine, but I can't get it to boot windows from the HD....Nothing seems to work, I thought that it might be a bad RAM chip so swapped it for one of mine and still the same thing....I tried resetting BIOS and still no success. Tried taking all the cards out but it doesn't help..... Any suggestions on what to do? Please help.

ProjectPat, I thought that it could be bad RAM and I tried my own RAM that works....still unsuccessfull

well you aren't going to get any help with an attitude like that...

did you even try compaq support???

Have you tried using the Compaq recovery CD that came with the computer? There's a reason they put that in there... ;)

thanks for the suggestions....sorry about the attitude...was pissed at freakin compaq....tried calling compaq about it and they said that I need the restoration cd...only after that they can help me....the problem is that the friend doesn't have the cd....
