Help needed... BADLY

I'm really freakin' out over here, my friend finally got the money to pay me to build him his A64 pc. Well, I do that, everythings fine for a bit, then upon a reboot, the screen is OVERRUN by these horizontal green lines, everywhere!!! What do you think I should do? I'm really scared, considering this isn't my PC, and he trusted me to get the job done for him 🙁

sounds like a bad video card

How can it be that it was working fine for a time, then it began to do this?

maybe it was faulty, but worked for a little bit? sorta like a landmine...

Any chance the motherboard could have a part to play in this? it's one of those Chaintech VNF-250's or whatever they're called.

Why don't you try another video card on the machine to see if the video card is the case.

Good idea, the card in there now is one of those Sapphire 9600 Pro's with the green PCB. Mabye that dinky HSF is causing it to overheat and artifact? Anyway, he has a Radeon 9200 laying around, might slap that in tommorow, see if that fixes it. But here's the thing, and i'll be blunt with you, i was taking out a wireless 802.11b card, and the screwdriver kinda slipped 😱 the drop=off was no more than an inch and a half, and it made contact with the motherboard, at the end of the video card. Could that have anything to do with it?

Don't worry about overheating....I have a Sapphire 9600Pro, it's got one hell of a little cooler, but it gets the job done. although...I wouldn't know about one of the Toxic (is that it, with the green pcb?) 9600 Pro's..I've never even see one.

ur screwdriver slipping and hitting the mobo would be very highly not the cause of these horizontal lines.put another card in it to see if the lines go away , if they do then return the card and get another.

Are you sure that the videocard is properly seated, and that there is no debris on the connectors?

The other thing to check is the AGP voltage. It should be at 1.5v.

Also touch the back of the card when the green lines appear. If it's blazing hot, chances are the heatsink is not properly installed on the card. If you can confirm that heat is the issue (point a house fan at the open computer case), then if you know what you're doing you can re-install the HSF (realizing that this voids your warranty...although please folks, let's not go there).

You guys have been VERY helpful. Here's my plan of action. I'm going to plop in his 9200 and see if that fixes it, if it does, he can just use the 9200 until newegg ships a replacement. And his monitor has been kinda funky for a LONG time, i'll try the 9200 with another monitor after that, since I know the 9200 is fully functional, and it works without green lines on another monitor, i'll know it's that 🙂

THANKS. It turned out to be the video card, took the 9600 Pro out, plopped in the 9200, and everything was back to normal. He's gonna just return the 9600 Pro, and get a 9600XT. Thanks again guys.
