I'm trying to edit a Microsoft word document but everytime I try to type in one of the boxes it says,"This modification is not allowed because the document is locked."

How can I unlock it?

Did you lock it on accident? Did you download the file from a website? It might be locked to protect the content, much like an Adobe PDF.
