i currently have 2 500gb wd re2s and a 36gb raptor, and i just orderd a raptor 150gb. i would like to know if it would be better to buy another raptor and put it in raid 0 or another 500gb re2 and put the three of them in raid 5. which one would give me the highest transfer rates? data storage is of no issue, i only want raid 5 because it stripes across 3 drives. i will be using this for gaming.

RAID 5 is only if you want redundancy/fault tolerance. RAID 0 should be faster but offers no fault tolerance.

ok, now the question is, should i go for the 3 500s in raid 0 or the two raptors in raid 0?

I would go for the Raptor 150. 36 is way to small for your windows/games nowadays. In fact, I am upgrading my old 74 gig Raptor to a 150 for my windows/games drive.

Do yourself a favor and dont bother with Raid0.

The Raid5 vs the raptor are apples and oranges. Since you say you just want speed, go with the raptor, but if you need your data safe, get another 500Gig drive. Or if you dont have alot of data, you can put the two 500gig drives in Raid1 (you only get 490ish gigs of space though).

Do yourself a HUGE favor and forget about raid0.

My suggestion for speed is to go with the raptor 150. I have personally had the 36 and 74 gig raptors in raid 0, and can honestly say the raptor 150 will give you the same speed (and more space).

so i should buy another raptor and put it in raid 0? will it be better than the 3 500s in a raid 0? im going to use the raptor/ raptor raid for installing games to. and use the 500s for storage.

like i said money and data backup is not an issue.

Money isn't an issue? Go ahead and buy two 150raptors and put them in Raid0, yes it will be faster in benchmarks and games might load 1 second faster. From my experience with two 500 seagate 7200.10's in Raid0, (just for testing) they were not faster than my one 74raptor.

Or you could save $170 and no real noticable difference and just get one 150gig raptor.

ok, i have a new plan. combine the two 500s in a raid 0, use them for 1tb of storage. use two 150gb raptors in a seperate raid 0 for installing games and program files to. and use the 36gb for the os. is that a wise plan? can you have two seperate raid 0s at the same time?

forget about raptors man, they have lower throughput than a lot of the newer drives out there, and only slightly better seek times, and cost many times more per GB. raptors' current incarnation is on the way out the door IMO.

Also I would not bother with raid-0 with only 2 drives. Tried it, not worth it. RAID gets fun when it's REAL raid and not raid-0, and more than just a couple of drives.

also, 150GB is piss poor storage space for any new rig these days. of course that's just an opinion.

ok, it was urgent because i had to order the drives right away.

i went with an extra two 500gb drives, so ill have raid 0 on 4 500gb drives. its a little small, only one tb. but i guess itll have to do(lol).
